Once the signal is in the machine, the preamp is out of the loop. That’s not what “attenuation” is, in this context. The attenuation setting allows you to boost or subdue a signal, so that you may mix it with its fader around the 0dB mark, where it is most effective. Auto-mixing attenuation is nonsense, since it’s really just a second volume control. Set the attenuation; automate the fader.
