Good day :-)

I've received mono left and right tracks from a friend/collaborator who works in ProTools. We noticed that, unless I have those mono tracks panned hard left and hard right, I get what looks like a stereo metering with two different level meters on track.

I asked in the Reaper User Group and it appears that Reaper defaults to stereo tracks? Is that correct (seems to be lol)

Is there something I'm doing in the settings that creates this track metering visual situation?

And, is there a deeper philosophy that I'm maybe missing here? Seems like a mono track is always a mono track...so why confuse simpletons like me with appearing as a stereo?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts :-)

Does the track wave display look like it's mono, or stereo?
If it looks like it's a mono track, then it is a mono track.

It makes sense to me that the meters will be stereo, regardless.
How else would it be able to display the difference in volume left-to-right when the track is being panned?

Makes sense Dan. They're mono tracks in the wav form also. My friend on PT was surprised to see his mono tracks appearing as a stereo pair but I think Reaper operates that way if something isn't hard panned. Having never worked on PT or Logic or whatever, I'm not sure what is typical.

Thx!

SAW Studio also shows stereo meters per channel, regardless of whether or not the track waveform is mono or stereo.

I haven't really done much in Reaper (within the past 5 years or more) beyond inserting stereo wave files into a session for playback. I don't recall what I've seen the few times I recorded mono instrument tracks. But my guess is that I would find the same results as I do in SAW and as you're describing.

So, you're saying that when you pan a track hard left or right that Reaper displays a mono meter - or changes from a stereo meter to mono meter? I will have to check that one out....... it would surprise me.

Yes, it goes from two visual meters to a single visual if I hard pan. I suppose no matter what the track is (mono or stereo) it would be mono if hard panned. Reaper seems to show a bit and then at middle (bass drum for example) two meters on the track. I could send a pic except I don't know how to place a pic here...

So, I just tried it in Reaper - the meter displayed is still a stereo meter. The only thing that changes when I pan hard left or right is that only the left or right side of the meter shows activity. The meter itself doesn't change from stereo to mono. I can still see the split in the center of the display.
