Has anyone here ever seen a vs-840 that plays back previously recorded zip disks but is unable to be controlled (volume) by the track volume sliders? I have one that does this and the playback volume can only be controlled by utilizing the cue pots above the transport controls. According to the internal diagnostic program, the only component failure is cue pot #2. I cannot test the remaining cue pots because the 840 diagnostic freezes on the failed component and refuses to skip over to the next component.
The volume sliders/faders all pass the diagnostic. Any ideas??

Well, I am gonna start by replacing the cue pot that stalled the internal diagnostic. I suppose I will have to reassemble the recorder and proceed with the diagnostic in order to locate the next failed component. It sure makes me wish they had designed a "skip" feature in the diagnostic program so I could jump over the failed component and complete the test before disassembling and replacing any failed components. I had one other 840 that failed all the tact switches after the display tact and it turned out to have a shattered circuit board at the 3rd cue pot. It looked like someone dropped a heavy object directly on the 3rd cue pot knob (left a small black mark on top of the knob) and the downward force split the circuit board, disabling all the tacts after the display tact switch. I sure hope this one doesn't have that issue!

I decided to replace all the cue pots including the #1 cue pot (which passed the diagnostic) since it was easy to do them all at once. When I reassembled the recorder, the #2 cue pot still failed the diagnostic. Hmmmm... I have been testing this unit for about 2 weeks, off and on, and I have discovered a previously overlooked issue. The monitor select tact switch seems to be tilted at an angle unlike all the other tact buttons on the recorder. I wonder if it took an impact and damaged the tact switch. That would account for how the faders will be unresponsive until I cycle the monitor select switch thru the options. Then, the fader control will return. I am hoping the cue pot issues are related and will be cured after I replace the monitor select tact switch. I realize this recorder might not be a highly desired topic but I am personally offended by gremlins in the machine...and I love to solve mysteries...and I have time....
