Hello!

When I had my 1880 about 8 years ago, I fitted one of these on it...

ebay

Nice, coz you can obvs swap cards easily.

As we know, the 880 normally takes a 2.5" drive but, when I was stripping and cleaning my 880EX when it arrived, I noticed that the 2.5" bracket could easily be removed and it looked to me like there were fixings present for 3.5". And, indeed, the drive blanking plate is 3.5".

So, has anyone tried the above type of drive and how would one go about connecting it to the VS? They take 40 or 44 pins. Via the normal connector or straight to the board? I'm getting a second 880EX and it would be handy to be able to easily swap CF cards between the two.

I had a hot swappable 3.5" cf ide drive for my Akai MPC2KXL (the startech ones aren't hotswappable) but I can't remember the brand. That would be great for making back ups.

Just connect it to the IDE connector on the main board. It‘s a standard 40-pin job, with an extra couple of 5V and ground pins.

Oh, brill, that easy?! I had a vague recollection of reading somewhere about needing to make up a custom cable for certain drives coz the VS board has a 50 pin connector on or something? But, brill, of it has a 40 pin on it already, job done.

What's that you say about the extra pins? What happens with them? How does one power the drive?

It‘s a 50-pin connector. The first 40 make up a standard IDE connection. The other ten are power and ground.

Worse, because such alterations make the device less reliable, since there are more contact connections, less speed and more errors in signal transmission.
Connecting an SSD drive is just a standard connection, and there is no need to invent anything and it is reliable. Thats why is better . Time will tell . And if you want to just argue ..., it’s a waste of time. Thank you . \:\)

There are no more connections, and CF cards aren‘t necessarily faster (or slower) than SSD‘s, because they‘re the same tech. In fact, since PATA is obsolete tech, I‘d be curious as to the innards of that SSD; I reckon there‘s a good chance there is a converter inside. CF cards, on the other hand, are native PATA devices.

A quick scan of Amazon reviews indicates, that the device you linked to is indeed a converter with a SATA device inside. So tread carefully. Have you actually tried it on a VS machine?

Yes, it works perfect in my Roland VSR880. But in my case, it not work with my Roland VS2480. I think it's a transitional connection problem... These adapters are mostly made in China, and many of them are not always made correctly, you have to search and select for a long time. This model of SSD HD, which I first introduced, is not an adapter from SATA to IDE, it is a full-fledged SSD HD, but with the appropriate connectors. And he works right away. At the present time, no company will bother and produce SATA HD, for 8 or 16 GB, I think. The main thing is that it works without problems and that's good. But for VS2480 I use SSD SATA, with adapter, from SATA to IDE. Such realities... this is what's inside of this SSD HD for my VSR880 : https://photos.google.com/photo/AF1QipPpi_fHpNlKZA41QYCLa1OEwYV_4J8m7E5O1uJy

Your photos don‘t work, sadly.

There exist genuine PATA/IDE SSDs from Kingspec. Just make sure you get one of the grey ones. I do see them offered for sale, still, here and there. Those should (theoretically) work in any VS machine. The device you linked to on AliExpress, though, well… just look at the product pictures. The back label clearly states „SATA“. These are SATA devices internally, with an IDE converter built in. SATA-IDE converters are a crap shoot, when it comes to VS machines, as this forum is testament to.

Well, I just ordered one. So I’ll find out if it’s the right one or not by mid month.

Please let us know. I have several VS machines begging for some flavor of solid state storage.

Well unfortunately what was pictured in the listing was the grey drive. What they actually sent was a white drive. It doesn’t work. Now I’m hassling with the Seller to return it.
