This might help. I have the pdf of the service manual for the 1824. It has has a section that specifies a comprehensive 'test' procedure for the machines to identify any problems (leds not working, faders, memory etc)
I tried to load the pdf here but it scrambled the formating, making it unreadable
So If you pm me with your email address, I can email it to you if you think this will of any use.
In my experience, these machines are solid and stable, so if the physical side is OK (faders, buttons, switches, click wheel etc) then you will be fine, and of course they are repairable, unlike more recent tech
