On Friday I backed up the songs from the internal drive on my VS-1680. The old drive has 2 partitions, just less than 4 GB. I'm not the original owner, but I assume it's 20 year old original equipment. I replaced it with a new 32 GB SSD card in a 2.5" IDE drive adapter.

The VS-1680 started up, said "Initializing IDE" and "Please Wait" ... and that was Friday night. Now it's Sunday and it's still going.

The manual gives a time estimate for physically formatting a ZIP disk, which works out to about 10 MB per minute. This is going slower than that, if it's only initializing the 16 GB it can use. If it's formatting the whole 32 GB for some reason, it should be finished by tomorrow morning...

Your VS likely isn’t formatting, just trying (and failing) to talk to the SSD. IDE adapters come in many forms, and not all of them play well with the VS recorders.

Personally, I much prefer to use CF cards in my VS’s, as they are native IDE devices, and require no conversion electronics, just an adapter to connect the differently sized headers in the VS and the CF device.

It's still going this morning... I'll interrupt it.

Yes, thanks, that was definitely the case. The VS-1680 was not compatible with the SSD.

I should try to document what didn't work here:
VS-1680 2.024
The IDE adapter is hard to identify. It comes in two pieces: a white plastic case, and a board labeled "N-2507I".
The SSD is a KingDian Killer SSD M100 32GB
