rather than the built in cd burner, which sometimes works and sometimes not.

With a dedicated SCSI cable and CD drive ( that work together with Rolands VS line )
When connected, press "Project List" and choose "ExternalDrive" or something like that, at the bottom of the list ....
Many years since I did this ..... So maybe I remember it wrong ....
Oh yeah ... And hook them up first before startup , and start external CD drive first .
The CD drive must have a "Terminator" plug in the second SCSI jack .
Make sure the VS and the CD drive have different SCSI ID number. VS #7 (?)

Cheers !

I am not seeing anything mentioning an external drive anywhere, including inside of "Project"
I would like to be able to choose the external drive.

As I said ; it' s been many years since doing this ... But I hooked up one of my "spare" VS to a CD drive today and this is what it actually shows in LCD screen after pressing the "PROJECT" button : "Project List" with the internal HD's partitions listed ( IDE 1 HD, IDE 2 HD and so on. At the bottom of the list = SCSI 1 CD-RW ( That If you have a dedicated CD drive that your VS accepts ( CDR2 ? or PlexWriter/ Plextor ), and if it is connected with proper SCSI cable ... DB-25 ? )
If you don't see SCSI 1 CD-RW at the bottom of the Project List there's probably wrong CD drive, faulty cable, no "Terminator", wrong SCSI ID number .... I have no more ideas .....

Cheers !

First, connect to the outboard burner by using a GOOD SCSI cable. When you switch the VS on, the machine will go through a self-test. At the bottom of the first screen, you will see SCSI.........
Make sure it recognizes the burner --under the number assigned (8) or (10) or whatever

THEN it should appear at the bottom of the slits Catweazle mentions
