Removing the hard drive from the 1680 is easy. You just open the front panel and it slides straight out. But on the 2480 you open the front panel and it's screwed in and blocked, with no way to slide it from the front panel. So - do you have to pull off the whole 2480's main casing to get to the drive to remove it?

By mentioning the "front panel" I guess you have the old "HD" version 2480 and not the CD / DVD version ... Right ??
There's a Lock screw to the right of the hard drive "housing" , turn it a 1/4 CCW and drag the unit right out .... Easy as that ....

What "front panel" do you open on the CD / DVD version ???
The CD tray ???

To remove the hard drive from CD / DVD version you have to
turn the VS-2480 upside down and loosen all screws from
bottom cover ( keep them i order and remember their position )
then you'll see the hard drive sitting under the CD / DVD drive ...
