So I have an external compressor. I have routed out of aux b and then back in to track 9. That seems to work. My problem is when I try to mix it along with all the other tracks down to a stereo track (say 15/16) the sound of the effected track with the comp is drastically different. My question is in the routing screen how do I route the dir properly. Right now I have aux b routed to dir1/2 in the output screen and then track 9 in routed to recording track 15/16. I noticed the mix on/off can be heard when switching while the track is not being mixed down but once I start mixing down it makes no difference if its on or off. I hope I'm explaining this right.

I'm not sure I understand completely... but it seems like you may have the external effect loop still active when trying to mix the recorded tracks.

Once the effect is recorded to a track, it can be used in the mix. But if the loop is still connected, you will still get whatever is feeding aux B coming back into the mix on the input channel and going into the master bus.

If you have disconnected the external effect loop when mixing, then I don't have an explanation. Hopefully someone else can get further.

If you are trying to use the compressed tracks in parallel, there may be some very small time alignment issues.

Yeah something is off. It sounds fine with the comp before mixdown when just playing the track back but right when I try to mix it down to 15/16 it doesn't sound the same. I'm just trying to figure out how to route everything properly.

Have you tried muting the channels that you used the DIR on? The AUX A/B should still give you signal

So the compressed tracks sound fine, but the MIX sounds bad? That could be phasing due to latency.
The VS2480 has low latency, but not zero. Signal has to go out the converters, into your external compressor, then back through converters to a recording track. If that recorded track is slightly off from the rest of the tracks time-wise, you may hear the phase cancellations - especially affecting low mids (they tend to "disappear"). If that's the case, you have to nudge the waveforms on the compressed track to align the wave peaks with the other tracks. It's easy on a computer DAW where you can zoom in and see the waves. I've never tried it on the Roland.

Or, it could be something else entirely. \:\(

SO it was something very simple. I held shift and hit tr1-16 to bring up the dir menu. I switched the dir from pst to pre. I turned down the recorded track, turned mix off and then turned up input 9 fader which is the new volume control. Everything sounds great now. Changing pst to pre is what did it. thanks guys
