I have a very old 1880 that I bought when they first came out.
I really never turned it off, but I believe everything still works on it.

However, the display is not working or should I say the display is not very bright anymore and gets darker with the contrast knob. It's very difficult to see.

I just recently brought it over to pretty much the only electronics guy left in the area that fixes things anymore.

He's gonna look at it.

I have also heard that the display is backlighted underneath the display (maybe an LED). I was figuring this light could even have a ton of dust on it, or be on its way out.

I have no idea.

It's a pretty cool machine, and I hope it can be fixed, it could even be a capacitor or some voltage source to the light.

I know most home recording folks have moved to Pro Tools, but I just use it to make some home recordings. I'm not gonna buy another recorder and have a subscription to Pro Tools.

I'm not sure what the light source is or the part number of the light source.

Any info or help would be awesome.
I believe the external CD burner still works, but I have not tried it in years.

Thanks in advance
Michael

I came across this. It's about a Roland fantom X7 keyboard, not VS 1880. But, a similar problem with the display.

"I had screen problems on my X7 too.
I realised if my keyboard is stored in a cool place over night (say my car trunk) the screen gets really dim when powered up in the morning.
I also discorvered if i leave the keyboard in direct sunlight for a bit, say 5mins, the screen shows very well and BRIGHT or if it is left in the trunk (again) ,the heat makes the screen show good!
I have my X7 since 2005.

and this

"I had this exact same problem with my X6. The screen went darker and darker very slowly until it really was completely unreadable in daylight. In my case the problem was the voltage inverter for the screen backlight.

Roland Finland service worked as a charm as usual, just can't thank these guys enough."

It‘s a fluorescent tube. There is no part number, because the display assembly (Sharp LM320191) is a single unit (Roland part number 01124234). It‘s a 320x240 (QVGA) display. They’re no longer in production.

I have not heard back from the repair guy yet.
I'll tell him about this. Kind of makes sense as it's not completely dead.

Maybe there is another bulb option, maybe not.

Thx a bunch

Maybe it's time to toss it.
