Since we have an extensive library recorded on the 1680, we still work "in the box" to record & mix projects. It would be a lot quicker to export songs off the 1680 into an eternal scsi hard drive. This way, the Song Copy Playable setting is used to transfer quickly, unlike the CD data burn process.
I do not have a Windows type PC for other types of backing up.

Have you considered VirDis? It's what we use here...works amazingly well.

There are a number of flash-based SCSI emulation solutions out there, some of which (reportedly) work with the VS machines.

Alternatively, Iomega Jaz drives and media are plentiful, in the second hand market. Just make sure to make multiple redundant backups, and check them, before relying on them.

I would not recommend investing in actual SCSI hard drives, these days.

I forgot that it's only for PC. But now I remember my IT guy had me buy a used PC for the Express purpose of using as backup space for my VS 1680. I think the computer was a hundred bucks used... It's got more space than I could ever fill.

I'm going to follow along to see what these solution will be for somebody with a Mac...

I run VSWE on Win XP and Win 7 inside VirtualBox on a Mac. It works fine, and you set up a shared folder where the converted files are stashed for REAPER import.

I've updated to VirDis version 6 and have to say it is awesome. I have been using Reaper for many years, but do still use the VS-1880 to record some things, as well as for writing sessions. It's a simple unit with no DAW distractions. I export on the windows computer, thumb drive it over to the Mac, and line it up on the grid in Reaper. Hopefully Bill at ASC will develop a version for Mac. Thanks Bill for your hard work with VirDis. If you are using a VS and do not have VirDis I suggest you purchase it.

Some would say to put the thing to bed. Fact is it actually records well. For example, passive guitar to Source Audio EQ2, to an active Radial DI J48 to the VS XLR in while inserting the electric guitar parametric EQ sounds very, very good - and way better than the VS Hi Z. Exported with VS Wave Export, and imported into Reaper compared my performance recording in the VS and the Clarett+ and noticed little difference. Just saying...still sounds good and usable.
