Lots of well-crafted, artful lyrics, including You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling, We Gotta Get Out of This Place, On Broadway, and He's So Shy, among many others. A huge talent.
RIP.

I used to frequent small songwriting workshops in the 90s. Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil were the hosts of one. I really enjoyed them. The stories were one thing, and amazing, but the tips and techniques stayed with me. She seemed a sweet woman.

That team of Mann/Weil wrote so much I love.
Funny to see the outpouring at Hoffman’s of all the brill building era stuff I didn’t know they had anything to do with. I mean I knew they came from there….but, THAT being their take always is otherworldly. My youth they were “the ballad people”. My first 45 single I bought was Sergio Mendez “never gonna let you go”….
Anyhoo. Rip.

Seems appropriate to point to my screen name here. Which was short for the thought of what music I loved : Pop music….like Mann, not like Max Martin.
Even though, that was 1999….Max has more than earned my respect. But then he was te king of that Britney Backstreet Boy sound that people thought of when I would say “pop music”.

Never Gonna Let You Go (Sergio Mendez) Don’t Know Much (Ronstadt) Somewhere Out There (Ingram and Ronstadt)
The Dolly was always one of the few “not ballad” examples in my memory.

It must have been amazing to stroll the Brill Building back in the day. In one room, Goffin and King. In another, Mann and Weill. In another, Sedaka and Greenfield. Lieber and Stoller. Pomus and Schuman. So much great music.

also Neil Diamond and Baccarach and David
I had a concert venue set up on Second Life called the Brill Perplex and we had a museum for all those great songwriters.
