I have a VSR 880. The songs that I recorded on it aren't computer readable of course. From a quick read of the VS-880 FAQ I seem to understand that I need a CD RW burner (and a separate case/Chassis ) but it needs a special cable (DB20 to DB50?) which is generally hard to find. Sounds like a huge hassle.

Did I read correctly on this site that one can use an IOMEGA Zip 100 in this capacity (saving, backing up spng data and 'mastering' songs in a computer readable format) for my VR-880? and from there transfer my songs to my PC? Can anyone confirm? I would appreciate a quick response seeing as in 15 hours a chance to get one with its cable and blank media for 50 bucks will expire.

Thanks for your help.

i believe the cable you're talking about is a SCSI cable.
it's for a SCSI CD/RW or a SCSI Zip drive. i think your
VSR 880 also has R-BUSS connections too. R-BUSS connections
and cables look like SCSI connections and cables, but they
are not the same.

Hi Myke. Thanks for answering. I was a bit confuesd by your answer.

I suppose you assumed I tried to connect my VSR-880 to my computer with an R-Bus cable in an attempt to transfer the songs to my computer? I did not do that. Nor would the physical connection be possible with any computer made in the last 15 years.

My VSR-880 has the HDD swapped out for an SD Card which I removed and inserted into my computer to try to transfer the songs that way. It failed.

In short I would like to share my songs with my friends and others online. What is the best way to do that?

The manual seems to say the only way to export your songs is to create an audio CD (CD-R Write). I presume one would then rip those files to their computer to do the transfer.

I found an Iomega Zip drive online with a SCSI cable. If I buy it, CAN I SAVE MY SONGS ON THERE AND THEN TRANSFER MY SONGS TO MY COMPUTER FROM THERE?.

Thanks for your help.

No. (And there’s no need to shout.)

Your VSR has digital stereo outputs, both optical and coax. Connect one of those to your computer‘s digital sound input, and have at it.

Alternatively, a plethora of analog outputs are available.

Your owner’s manual has all the info.

Hi Gyorpb, thanks for answering and sorry for 'yelling'.

My computer doesn't have any digital stereo IN's. neither coax nor optical. I found this very old chart before posting my original question.
http://www.ps139.com/vs880ex/pages/VSCompat.pdf

It seems to say the Iomega Zip 250 is compatible with the VSR-880. I'd appreciate if you could fill me in if I'm missing something or If I'm misreading it. Just so I can understand. Thanks.

P.S.
I am not interested in recording to a cassette at the moment. nor do I own any digitizing equipment. I'm not in the EU and Chassis Plextor burners seem pricey and rare in the EU at the moment. As well as a custom cable would be unnecessarily pricey.
Thanks for your help.

This is for anyone else that may find themselves in my position.
(Which I kind of doubt since I'm such an obseesive weirdo)

To answer my own question. The easiest way to get your songs out of the VS and onto a computer is to, indeed, after making some recordings on your SD card situated in the VSR880, pull the damned thing back out and put it in an SD card slot in your computer. (or an SD card reader attached to a computer.)

And then here comes that B!@tch. You have to Download an obscure (and now blocked) Application called VS Wave Export.

http://www.thegoodlibrary.com/VSWaveExport.php

Luckily I found a guy on YouTube with a private link to a copy of this almost derelict application he hosts on Dropbox.

I'm currently wrestling with this software because I'm still learning to record on the VSR 880. On my SD card was a mix of full songs and individual tracks in all different files that are parts of full songs.

Anyways I'm so relieved because I had gone all in with the VS without doing my homework and ended up blowing serious cash. I bought the full mastering SF-2 cards, the Roland DIF-AT, RMDB Cable, Sync cables, a custom 'multi-core' DB25 to RCA's, Toslinks, the whole 9. And I was this close to going full retard and buying these ridiculous Plexxor burners or a gasp PARALLEL Zip drive.

Only regret is not having the HDP-DLE Caddy to be able to pull out my SD card with ease, so everytime I want to transfer something I'll have to rip the whole unit out of the rack and unscrew the lid. I guess I'll have to minimize that by 'shooting up the club' and maxing out the SD with a few dozen songs at a time before I pull out.

Thank you for watching.

I'm not in the exact same position, but close enough:

I have a VS880ex with stack of ZIP disks holding archived sessions (songs) in playable format and a (probably) still working SCSI ZIP drive. (VS and ZIP purchased new in 2001, sessions from 2001-2007.)

I think the easiest path to getting the songs onto a Windows PC will one of these:
  • Get some kind of USB to DB25 SCSI adapter (if it exists) so I can read the ZIP disks directly without going through the VS.
  • Get one of the SD adapters mentioned on other threads here (if they still exist), load all the songs (or as many as I can) into the SD card, and then read the SD from the PC.
  • Transfer a batch of several songs from each ZIP onto the VS hard disk, pull it out, connect it to a USB to IDE adapter and transfer to PC. :||
Any thoughts on which of these is the more likely to succeed?

Then I have to use VS Wave Export...

Any chance you can link to that? I saw the version from thegoodlibrary linked from Roland at https://support.roland.com/hc/en-us/arti...ks-to-WAV-Files but my antivirus flagged it as a trojan.

It's a shame Roland doesn't just publish the details of their file format so anybody with the skill and patience could build a new export utility.

If they exist, they’re obscure, and finicky. I would suggest buying a USB Zip drive. They’re plentiful and cheap. Test it first, on a non-critical disk.

^^This is the route I have taken and likely would be the simplest path for others:
Use the SCSI cable and burn your music to an external CD/RW.
Then put the finished disc into your computers disc drive and dump the music into windows media player or iTunes.
Then your good to go to export online from there.
I’ve done it many times with success.
