Greetings!

I am happy to state the -2000 is now running a 64g CF card via a Startech IDE2SD2 and Sandisk Extreme CF card. This configuration performs all operations and survives warm and cold restarts. Big thanks of ZoomDuck for suggesting the Startech bit.

FYI, the "VER:MO3C" SATA adapter and Samsung EVO 860 (250g) work, but any startup, warm or cold requires repeated poke of <Enter/Yes> before the drive is recognized. All operations are performed, but this seems a bit 'iffy' for live location recordings. A "JP103-5" SATA adapter is preferred, but they are very hard to get now.

I'd appreciate input/opinions/recommendations re disconnecting the fan. Mine was disconnected during the testing and the black power supply heatsink was borderline uncomfortably hot to touch.

Now the the HDD is absent, my thinking is that there would be less heat in the case, so maybe the fan is unnecessary.

I would not think so.
There are more things in it, of which you can really shorten its lifespan, if you don't cool it at all. Some components really don't like to get very hot. (How about that CF card?)

And you already said that the power supply heatsink was almost too hot to touch. Which is on the side where the fan is supposed to exhaust the heat out of the machine. Those slits on the back on the right. But maybe you can use a fan that runs a little slower, so the sound of it is almost inaudible. Or a fan that is designed more efficiently, so it makes less noise. I'm just guessing about the noise, I don't like that about mine.
I'm going to put another fan in it....some day.

Because in this 'no fan' scenario it seems very likely that the power supply will be the first thing to malfunction and/ or die. I would personally not want to do that to my vs2000cd. Mine is still in full working order. And I really like to keep it that way.

Well...FULL working order...As good as. Minus the -stop- knob that does not work. Or you really have to hammer it. (I found that out by accident.) But that can be controlled on the screen. And one fader, nr. 6 keeps moving on its own on the screen.
But I couple that to fader 5 and use a stereo signal on there.
So yeah, like I said. In full working order.

But hey, very cool that you've got that CF storage working.

That doesn’t make sense… the StarTech IDE2SD is a SecureDigital adapter. How are you shoehorning a CompactFlash card into that?

My mistake-- it's StarTech.com 40/44 Pin IDE to Compact Flash SSD Adapter - IDE to CF Card reader - CF to IDE Converter.

Apologies for the confusion.

The heatsink is hot enough that it's 'uncomfortable' for a thumb after 20 seconds or so. It may be that warm with the HDD and fan installed. I don't really want to revert to factory just to test it ATM. My fan is still very quiet, and as these exhaust out the bottom of the machine, pulling air in through the slits on the rear, the airflow hits the power supply first in its traversal of the machine innards. The fan will stay.

Thanks for helping me think.

Speaking of the FAN: On my old 1680 (I think) there was an option concerning the fan. Something like "turn off when ..... RECORDING or PLAY and/or RECORDING. I liked that feature. Wanted to access it on my VS2000, but lo and behold I can't find it. Does it even exist on VS2000? Please advise. -Furry-

Manual doesn't say chit. Of course there ARE over 400 pages so it's possible in my search that I've overlooked it, but me thinks they just dropped the feature. I've looked in multiple areas but bit the popo both times. Oh well. Such as it is/was. -Furry-

The 1680 does have the option to select fan operation. The 2000 does not. As the 2000 fan is “down firing” it is less noisy than those firing to the rear of the recorder, i e 1680, 2480, etc.

DK: Wonderful clear response that even this oldster could grasp. Thanks. "I did not know that" (Johnny Carson). A confirmation means so much after you've busted your behind digging and reading and still coming up short. The added info about "down firing" would have never entered my mind. Excellente', dude. Appreciate it. -Furry-
