FROM A VS DAT tape > to A 2480... If we try to plug into the SPDIF from a DAT >> will it just not recognize the signal ??
Ever an update to allow this transfer ??

No...... and No.......
You should know this by now. It won't change just because you wish it would.

Won’t the 880 work with a DAT drive? Find some kind local soul to borrow one?
Just a thought.

The 880, 1680 & 1880 are all capable of backing up and recovering from DAT, depending........ The 880 os has to be correct - the final os version 3.205 comes in two flavors (3.20A & 3.20B), which can be easily changed as needed, given the device to do the os update and the os media match (zip, floppy). 3.20A is the CDR version, 3.20B is the DAT version. They came packaged in the same zipped folder download from the Roland website..... probably still available.
I happen to have both 880 and 1680, as well as a DAT machine that can play and record VS backups (evidently, some DAT machines digitally mess with the data - some advanced tech no doubt - and Roland specifies the different tech won't work).
C Jo is welcome to send the tape(s) to me for transfer to CDR backup (not sure if I could do it with VIRDIS backup/recovery - I'm doubtful). But given that we'd have to trust snail mail for safe delivery (twice), I can imagine his reluctance to do so.... so I haven't offered, though the offer is there.
I thought he and I did this in the past - but maybe it was Frank I worked with on similar projects in the past...........

A VS DAT backup, is a digital file, wrapped in a DAT data stream, i.e., a 16-bit, 48kHz raw data stream. If you can find someone who can extract that (raw) data stream from the DAT tape(s), you can probably(!) play them back into the VS, provided you play them back in a lossless format.
Be easier to score a used DAT drive and a DAT-capable VS, however. Cheaper, too, probably.

Might take you up on that ==
will see which ones the different families are requesting --
would be mainly 880 files and a few 1680 backups ... The main problem is finding what is on the tape ( not much writing room ) > ya just hear BLAPTS .. probably many songs~~ per 60 minute tape ...
Will research a bit more --- I have the Floppies for the midi files labeled ---
We have the SCSI CD setup --- so just drop in your CD R ?? and the 2480 will recognize the early file ??? Thanks Kindly.

Yeah, with 880 and 1680 backups on CDR, the 2480 should be able to load the with no problem, if you're using the scsi cdr connection. After loading, it require the "import" routine to "unlock" the original form (880/1680) in order to edit/mix/save. The loaded original WILL play regardless.
Sometimes it's easiest to just load all the SONGS from the dat to the VS - keep what's wanted and delete the others. The dat backups DO have start and end markers though (if created properly), so finding individual SONGS isn't a huge deal, if titled or numbered correctly when backed up in the first place.
Burning backup cdr is a breeze, once the SONGS are sorted out - as you might remember doing before you got Vir DIS up and running.
check pm.
