I’m not sure- I’ve not heard it yet, but I’ll listen in a minute.
Which musicals? I love musicals. I have a boatload of papers I’m about to correct, so I usually listen to music when I do that.
Yes, saying The Beatles were rock, on one level of course they are, but in another way, they remind me of the standards very strongly, and no other rock groups do.

Yes, Green Day wrote a good song. I used to play that song. It’s no Here, There, and Everywhere.

So, when you go listen to my Postmodern Jukebox cover of a Greenday song, you dont hear absolutely as melodic writing as Beatles? I hear MOREso…and mind you—the intrigue factor to ME….is that I sure don't hear it when Billie Joe shit singer singer it over his chugged straight 8ths power chord arrangement.
That melody has been stuck in my head for a week….and honestly—that didn't happen from Green Day’s rendition EVER. its been inescapable for thirty years….NOW its stuck in my head. As a musician, that intrigues me.
Do you not hear that level of melodies in modern musicals? In “not rock” music? Leading to why I never considered the Beatles “rock” really.
Figures you'd like Green Day, they're mostly lame disposable rock.

I’m not sure Id say they wrote “a good song”’given that the lyrics are hot trash. But, it SURE is made into an ear worm by reharmonizing it and singing it with an actual singing voice.
The point I was making wasn’t that the Green Day melody was as good as one of Paul’s life time best….it was that the melody changes COMPLETELY by the arrangement behind it. That it might not be strictly a quality or Qualities of the melody itself that made the perception of The Beatles being the last of a style. Just thinking out loud on the topic.
I’m sure I love lots of music that would “qualify” for AL’s insults. Even if Green Day isn’t one of them!

Ha!
Well, I think he has a pretty good voice. I didn’t care for hers. His song is melodic. I just think the quality of melody The Beatles very frequently reached is much more like standards. I guess that’s why most of their catalog is considered part of that cannon.
But which musicals?

And since neither of you pals like Green Day, I’m going to defend them a bit. I think they’ve done a good job making catchy rowdy stuff, cynical and funny. Not that I ever listen to them, but they are a pretty good band with integrity.

Take your pick outside of Hamilton. Hamilton DOES have songs that use that vocabulary…but, theres so much hip hop that
Wicked is wonderful in terms of music that stands up without the context of story. Phantom of the Opera was post Beatles.
I actually think Billy Joel tends even further to old show tune vocabulary than The Beatles ver did. And lets be honest—you mean Paul when you relate them to standards. Right? Which brings up—do you think his melodic sense changed over the years? Hes done 50 years of MANY albums post Beatles.

He gives them credit for writing a song more melodic than the Beatles.

Pop’s point is that context is largely responsible for melody. That’s an interesting thought, but I don’t hear it

George Harrison said that the group that embodied the spirit of the Beatles was Monty Python's Flying Circus.

This band, and only with this song was close Lennon/McCartney type bit of writing and production with the flute mellotron.
I hate the video, the video steals it and directs your attention to it's dumbness.

Hey Chris Flynn - That's a cool song. I listened without watching the video.

You know who I really feel like was the last rock band to get close to the Beatles?
The Police.
