I woke up today in a mood to listen to Van. Even though his politics are stupid, I still love the artist. In some book I was reading though I can't remember the author, the writer spoke of meeting him and they went up into a bedroom and played songs to each other. Van's life is music, it's really all that he's about. Moondance is the most flowing album there is, Vocally he takes you into a zone not unlike the zone Neil Young's lead guitar takes you into during one of his long jams with Crazy Horse behind him.

Anyway I relate to Van because he's like me in that he does music as part of his being, he would do it no matter what circumstances got thrown at him. They say he's really difficult but listen to those songs, that's who he really is.

My one claim to fame. I played with Van one time.
We both grew up in Belfast. Before he had his first hit, “Baby please don’t go/Gloria” in 1964, his band was the house band in a small club in Belfast called Sammy Houston’s jazz club (which was more R&B than jazz)
I didn’t go to that club very often, but I went with a few friends one time. The drummer didn’t show up for some reason, and one of my friends who had gone to school with Van and knew him said “hey, Dave is a drummer, he can sit in”. So I did. I played a whole gig with Van the man.
Shortly after that, he formed Them, took off to London, and had his first big hit, and the rest is history.
