... I really hope that America doesn't adopt a particular faith.

I mean if you're a Christian of whatever flavor, good for you. I'm not interested in preventing you from believing what you like, and if it makes you feel better or helps you be a kinder person, that's great. That is your business, and you can believe what you want.

I've spent more time than I have in a long time in churches the past couple of weeks. And I just would really find someone forcing me to do a bunch of stuff I don't believe in to be just offensive. I don't want to go to a concert or a game or dinner and have to participate in a bunch of worship to something I don't believe in. Leave me in peace. If you want to, great - but leave me out of it, and let me politely decline to participate and respectfully abstain.

The United States is not a Christian nation. It's a nation where all can practice their faith in freedom and safety - or they can practice a faith at all.

If you don't feel that way, I'd like you to imagine how you, in your faith, would feel being forced to respond to the Call to Prayer five times a day. If you aren't Muslim, you'd be pretty unhappy. And I wouldn't blame you.

Well that's how I feel whenever I'm required to participate in thanking Jesus for whatever.

I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't do stuff like that. It's rude and unAmerican.

Freedom of religion also means freedom FROM religion.

Jefferson was a Unitarian, as I am. Unitarians have no assigned beliefs, can believe whatever they wish, even be Athiests, interfere little in folks lives other than offer help when needed.

"Thy shall not wear thy religion on thy sleeve", Bill Mahaer, the 11th commandment.

I have one neighbor that told me he takes every word in the bible literally. I replied, so, I guess you haven't read it all. There's some pretty strange stuff in there.

I got you, Tom!

I don't think America will adopt a specific religion considering that's our reason for existing at all but the diminishing party would like if it did but they're going down the tubes.

What were the circumstances where you had to attend church services?

I’ve worked a fair amount of sound gigs in, and associated with churches. They remind me of car sales lots, desperately trying to keep you there, get you into the finance office(tidings, offerings). Things are tough in the church attendance front. Praise& worship bands are meant to bring in a younger, less attentive crowd, make it fun.

It’s expected that you’ll be bombarded by requests to do something in Jesus’ name or God . Not all of them are so obvious and blatant in their pleas. It really depends on the pastor and sects/denominations. I don’t need to pray for good sound.

Interesting. I was looking at some job offerings at big churches running their sound. Nearly all had provisions that I would have to attend church functions, bring my family, volunteer at church whatever’s and attend pray groups. F no.

Shoot, I sure do. It's one of the main things I've been praying for lately.

Death of a friend of mine's father. Death of a cousin who was like a brother to my father in law, always very kind to me and my family. I learned about the death of another friend of mine, a drummer I used to play with.

Landing's been a little ... weird.

Great late Paul Simon reference, Dave!

I got your back flatcat. And you know, I predicted in the late 70s that the next Civil War was going to be between the religious right and everybody else. It seemed pretty obvious to me, but I had friends who thought it would never come to that.

My wife has gotten a lot of solace from her church (Catholic) since her son died two years ago. It was a long battle that I've been writing about but haven't posted yet.

I'm grateful that she found extra support in addition to mine...I don't share her faith, but I do everything I can to support her practice of faith. They are good people.

I agree that the Constitution forbids a national religion....it needs to stay that way.

i am not a believer but i think some religions do a lot of good work.

i also think they should not be involved with enacting laws that reflect their moral positions and if they do their tax exempt status should be revoked.

the founders knew from experience that mixing government and religion was (and is) a bad idea.

I used to rant and rave about the "megachurches" that are popping up everywhere...

But now I welcome them. Yeah, absolutely emphasize lights and sounds and music to convey the "message". Because the show is what it's all about. Religion is JUST A FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT. It is a collection of myths and legends that provide comfort and solace for the congregation. Christmas trees and Easter eggs - I'm there! It's all just stories from our ignorant past.

Truth cannot be revealed - it must be discovered.

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: “Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
‘My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

Typical Republican comment. It's funny how they say shit they know isn't true just to get a rise out of reasonable people.

Fat Donny wasn't the first cocksucker to do this, but he sure made it popular. I think it'll be funny as hell when he chokes to death on a cheeseburger and people like Pete will be left holding their limp dicks.

The symbol of the Unitarian Church is the flaming martini glass:

And the Holy Trinity is referred to as "Daddy-o, Laddio, and Spooky"

I heard today that the Pope called an emergency meeting of all the Clergy and he said "I have good news and bad news. I will share the good news first. The good news is that Jesus Christ is back on the Earth and the second coming of Christ is upon us."

There was a celebratory roar throughout the land until somebody asked the inevitable question, "If that is the good news, what can the bad news possibly be?"

"Well," the Pope said, "He called from Salt Lake City."

Here is a good feature about being religious.
A devout religious woman conspired to have her husband killed and was caught. When asked how such actions fit with her religious beliefs she replied, "I knew God would forgive me by asking for His forgiveness".

So that is certainly a religion plus.
