This is a song about a boy and his hallucination learning to live together peacefully. It was an online collaboration with some folks I met on Kompoz.com (citations on the page)

It is the only time ever, still, that I have attempted to mix a real drum kit--that is, not samples of acoustic drums that are already perfectly recorded, an actual part played by an actual drummer on a close-mic'd kit. Which is why the cymbals will probably irritate you. \:D

Feedback welcome! (Though this one is done, mix critiques are absolutely welcome because they apply to future work, too!)

This sounds like a hit record to me.

I find nothing but things to admire about this song.

The story, the lyrics, the performance, the production, all rivaled by few.

It is fantastic by every measure.

Not for nothing Mime, but people regularly post their songs in Wawazzat's Bar & Grill because that's where the audience is at The VS-Planet. I hope you will too.

If you post it there I bet it will be heard.

I don't think many people come down here all that much.

That is some brilliant work sir, without question, congratulations,

HKP

@HKP, I didn't realize I'd had a reply on this. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen, and for the VERY kind words! Cheers!

That is really, really good! You're an incredible lyricist.

Oh, thank you so much! I must call your attention to the attributions on that page where the song is. I did the instrumentation aside from the acoustic drums (the "composition" aside from lyrics, that is), and Alex Dowding wrote the lyrics and sang it. I'm nowhere as good at either of those skills! lol! Then I mixed it. It was a successful online collaboration using recordings spanning twenty years, two states and two continents! \:\)

Real drums over 'beats' in my opinion really worked.

The Lyrics are cool, if you know what the song is about which is clearly set out . Clever concept really!

I would have liked to have heard more of a hook / easy to remember chorus in there , but the song stands as it is, thats just my personal thoughts as i was listening...'when is the chorus coming...oh the song is finishing.

The MIX is super pro, wish I could get there with my stuff. Also super cool is that it was a collaboration across continents, I should do some more of that myself, working with others opens up the project, doing everything myself keeps it 'narrow' I feel.

Its also great to see some replies in this forum...think the last one was back in the neolithic...

I enjoyed this. Thank you \:\)

Thank you for the thoughtful feedback, guys. Much appreciated. I totally recommend collaborating when you can. By all means, do check out kompoz.com - there is an active enough community to find someone to work on *something* that moves you!

Fun/funny fact about this particular tune. I had a "song bed" track of this (the original version had only the 808, the piano, e-piano, bass and was very heavy on the electric guitar), and I had written lyrics for it, and recorded vocals, and it was called "Painting", with that word in the chorus and everything. It wasn't quite jiving with me, but I still thought the bones were good, so I took my vocals out and gave it to Alex and it was a complete COINCIDENCE that he had lyrics he'd already written some time before, for a song called PAINTING.

It seemed cosmic. So eventually (about six years later, as of last fall) I located all the WAV files and started over with his vocal stems, the drum part I got from FIGSOUNDS in Miami, added synth, strings, and it felt like something finished. I was pleased with the result.

RGR -- I, too, felt there could be a lot more impact to the chorus. If I did it again, I'd probably bring up the distorted guitar a bit more, add a counter-melody (in a round), and add some jubilee-esque horns in there to make it blow up more.

If you check out kompoz--look me up!

Yay! I hope you like it. I wish there were more like it. I've tried others and this one has (had... sadly, it has waned) a pretty cool community.
