How do I get around this?

I like to start some songs quietly in the intro and then slam the volume up when the first verse hits . I want to make that first verse louder than the intro for impact.
So when I mix I will do this and render to wav. Then I run it through an online mastering bot ( because it’s free and I don’t have cash to splash mostly) . The final mastered wav still has that volume differential so I’m happy .

Then I upload it to you tube etc and next thing I know that volume differential has been ‘leveled out ‘ iin the upload process and I’m not so happy any more.

I guess it’s just how these platforms work but is there something I could do to avoid this ?

… no .. right ? Lol!

yes.

you got to make sure that the overall level of your song (called LUFS) is at around -13.0 LUFS.
i think there is a 0.5 LUFS of leeway up or down.

things like Youtube and others will correct the volume if you stray too far.
especially if it's too loud.

also, make sure that the song you submit has peaks no higher than -1.0 dBTP, to allow for the transcoding to mp3 or whatever lossy scheme they use.

Im not aware of any dyanmic changes with streaming. Try uploading the version before the “mastering bot”. See if you percieve it as retaining the dynamics.

All streaming does is analyze the loudness of what you upload and calibrate it with a global offset. Meaning a modern mastered hard rock song might get statically turned down -10.5db to meet their calibration level. Before its mastered, it might only need to turn it down by 2-3db….to make the same level.
