So it runs through Setup IDE, than switches to Scanning Drive and shows IDE SC0, the drive light stays on solid, you can hear the drive platter spinning, and prior to reaching this point, you can hear the normal stepper motor stuff, no bad sounds.

Interestingly enough, it passes all the self-tests, including IDE check...

The drive is one that came with, but I have swapped it out with other known good drives from other VS machines including Hitachi DK238a-32, which in other threads on this board have detailed as compaitble.
The drive in it is a Hitachi DK237a-32.

Any thought of what else I might try would be appreciated. It's actually a really clean, above average condition machine, I would hate to have scrap it.

Is there any way to bypass the boot-up drive scan so that i could get into System menu and see about a reformat...?

You said that you "have swapped it out with other known good drives from other VS machines including Hitachi DK238a-32..." -

Did any of these work? It's unclear to me.

Do you have an external drive?
Might it be possible to remove the internal drive, connect and boot to the external drive, just to get a clue? I recall that this can be done with the 1680, but I don't know if the 880 can. I think, too, that it may require having booted up before to access the menu that allows you to set it up first.... just an idea.

Yes, sorry to be unclear - no, the behavior with the other drives was identical.

I do have an external SCSI that I will have to dig out and see what happens with that.
