I need some help to solve with these detecting issues.
In 2010, I bought a used VS-2480 and used it intensively for one year. I did make backups on CD with a Plextor PX-W1210TSE. So far so good, but then the IBM Deathstar crashed!
I tried some Maxtor, Seagate and WD disks without any luck. Sometimes a disk was recognized and formated, but after some days, the machine froze over the detecting screen and said there was no drive. This situation is driving me crazy, it works or it does not! Perhaps there is some wiring issue internal? I opened and chacked all ribbon cableswithout finding a problem.
The only disk that keeps being recognized is a 20GB IBM Deskstar, though too small to restore all CD's and do create new recordings. To test the VS, I connected my Plextor to restore from backup, unfortunately the VS froze again in the detecting screen!
Any ideas?

I'm just taking a wild stab here because I've never used a 2480 enough to know its hard drive setup (like I do the 880 and 1680).
The 2480 does not use SATA drives - correct? It uses the older IDE, with the large connector and ribbon cable?
I expect the 2480 needs to have the HD jumper settings a specific way? - Master, Slave or Cable Select?
If so, have you double-checked the drives that aren't working against the old drive that crashed and the Deskstar that works?

The unmodified VS-2480 have IDE only. The jumpers should be master, but I tried all options and it did not matter much. All disks I tried that could be formated would be unrecognized later on.
Today also the 20GB IBM gave the error "Not Found any Formatted Drives. Jump to Force Initialize Drive. [ENTER]". So, I'm pretty sure the problem is not the HHD, but the VS itself.

Sorry to hear that. I hope you find a solution soon.

This may be capacitor failure. Bad caps can cause a litany of wierdnesses.
The 45 100mfd6V caps can be replaced without removing the main board.
I used 100mfd16v radial lead units, replacing one at a time, bending the leads into “feet” to solder on the PCB pads. Note the polarity.
Take the time to unsolder rather than twisting the old SMD caps off as some recommend. The pads are fragile.
Post- replacement, the playback crackling and project loading issues disappeared completely.

Try turning on the plextor and leaving the CD tray open before you turn on the VS.

Hey, I did look at the power supply caps for in that era, some manufacturers, used cheap capacitors that would fail after a while. I guess you suspect just the two big ones and not all capacitors in the machine? Leaving the CD tray open is a golden hint! Now it does not freeze at the "Initialize SCSI" line and allow me to list the drive. Though it freezes at "Loading Project". Can you confirm I have the dip-switches set right?
An other issue is that when i sart recording 2 tracks at the same time, the machine freezes after 3.20 seconds.

I didn’t have power supply issues, so left it alone. I did replace all 45 of the main-board 100mfd 6V caps with 100mfd 16V radials.

DK, did you have the audio issues as demonstrated in this video? Roland VS-2400 repair: recap!
I don't have audio issues and I think replacing all electrolytic capacitors might be an overkill and no guarantee my problem will get solved. Though, I ordered an ESR meter to test all caps without desoldering them. I'll replace rather only the bad ones.
Looking at my SCSI problems, I guess the caps C234 and C238 near IC100 and IC110, which are SCSI controllers, are the first to check.

Catweazle, I uploaded pictures to my website and linked the URL.
I guess you could also upload pics to some image cloud service, but those would break after a while due changing policy, paths or whatever.
Best solution would be an UBB plugin to upload pics to the VS-Planet server.

Ahaa ... I don't have a website, so it is what it is then No big deal, but sometimes a picture say more than words when trying to explain something to someone ....
Thanx for explaining to me
