Hi VS-Planet,
I am working with some effects on my VS2480 and I mostly use the effect cards. However, I also have a standalone compressor unit and a reverb unit which I would like to use. I have 6 effect cards, so two FX slots (7th and 8th) are unused. I was wondering,: How can I connect the compressor and reverb unit, that they function as 7th and 8th FX slot on my setup?
Hope to hear from you,
Kind regards, WesG

You have to create an analog wired audio loop using physical aux output jacks on the back of the Roland to your devices and return to physical input jacks on the front of the Roland.
I don't know of any hardware adapter that will connect to the empty FX slots inside the Roland. Those digital slots cannot send standard audio to a regular standalone analog device.

Thank you very much for your reply. I understand that I do have to hook it up with cables in aux output and input, but I was wondering if I could patch them in a way that they are configured for the FX slider 7 and 8. I tried to link them with the FX via the patch bay but I cannot solve the puzzle.

Oh, I see what you are trying to do. I don't see any way to patch an input to a FX return channel. The manual doesn't mention it. The 8 FX return channels seem to be dedicated to the internal effects. Maybe someone with deeper knowledge will contribute.

First of all, you dont have "6 FX cards", you have 3, with 2 FX each, at most.
What do you mean with "configurated to FX slider 7 & 8" ?
Do you want your external standalone FX's to return on FX return channels 7 & 8?
Not possible ... You have to use the analog inputs 1 - 16 and route to 23 -24 for example.
Then you can use Input channel mix (yellow LED lit) and the 23 - 24 faders / sliders to
adjust incoming volume.
Use AUX send knobs 7 - 8 to get the sound out of the 2480 to your external devices.
Route to AUX A 3-4 or AUX B 5-6 outputs in EZ ROUTING window.
I dont remember exact how to right now, but there's a few pages on how to do it
in the "big" 450 pages manual.
Page 215 "Setting up an external loop effect" is a good start
Cheers !

Yeah, the first thing I caught was the "6 FX cards". The VS-2480 only has slots for four of them. But the FX pulldown-menu will show 8 effects. As Catweazle said, each card can run 2 FX each, so if the FX pulldown shows 6 effects, that has to mean you have three FX cards. (2 effects X 3 cards = 6 effects total).
A far as using outboard effects, it's a matter of assigning the 1/4" outputs on the rear of the 2480 as direct outs (to get the track out), then routing it back into the 2480 by plugging it into one of the 2480's input channels. It's been a while since I've done it, but the trickiest part is getting the 1/4" output assigned correctly as a direct out (it's not difficult when you do it a few times). Only thing I found is you can only assign 4 of the 8 outputs as direct outs (3 & 4 and 5 & 6). Seems odd that this limitation would exist, unless there's something I'm missing. I clearly remember being able to assign a 1/4" output as a direct out. Look up the outputs and what you can do with them.

There's more to read about this on page 210 - 211 in the "big" manual. "Direct Bus", "Headphone Mix" and "AUX BUS" ...
Many years ago I managed to set up two separate monitor / foldback systems on stage while mixing FOH sound and recording the live set on my VS-2480. If I remember right I used the 7 - 8 AUX send knobs to adjust the levels of each instrument / channel to the monitors.
Dont't ask how ... I don't remember ...
Cheers ?

We do all our effects externally -- via the RBUS digital I/O
