Hi Everyone,

On my 3rd attempt I managed to backup several VS1880 songs with SPDIF to my 1010LT soundcard.
VS1880 complete song recovery via SoundForge and SPDIF OUT was straightforward AND WORKED!
Anyone know of this, or maybe I'm a late arrival to the topic?

Regards,

Bill

I'm afraid that I don't understand fully what you are saying.
Can you tell us in more detail?

It seems to me that you might be confusing terminology.
Either that, or I need to go back to the manual and see if I've missed a backup method (possible, I suppose...).

The only "backup" method I recall that uses the spdif out is a data stream out to a DAT machine. I'm not aware that SoundForge can be used as a substitute for a DAT recorder.

If you mean that you backed up Songs by sending audio out spdif, through your pc's soundcard and recorded that with SoundForge, then yes - it's a well-known technique.

But congrats are in order regardless.

Forgive me if I'm being dense. I'd need more details, I guess.

Hi uptildawn,

Sorry about the confusion. I am talking about song data NOT audio. Typically, 500mB VS1880 song DAT BACKUP stream with SPDIF to SoundForge > 16-bit 44.1kHz stereo .wav file.

VS1880 'Song recovery' .wav file playback needs to be SPDIF non-audio. It works a treat, and have tried it four times, just the same as DAT song data backup. I will never use DAT/CD song data backups again.

Oh, I see... recording the data stream as a wav file in SoundForge and playing back the file to recover, too. Interesting. I'll have to try that out. Might be a good way to transfer all my old dat backups to the pc.

1. SPDIF DAT Song DATA backup to DAW SoundForge/Wavlab etc.
16-bit, 44.1kHz stereo .wav file. SPDIF IN of course.
Same proceedure as a DAT data backup.

2. Song verify/recovery with DAW interface using SPDIF 'non-audio' DATA output playback.

Recommend trying a small VS1880 song first (less than 50mBs) before you get into the swing of things.
The only chance of song recovery failure is with NOT using SPDIF OUT in 'non-audio' mode. Having said that, most SPDIF DAW interfaces have much more advanced audio panel options, compared to my retro M-Audio 1010LT soundcard.

3. Copy the verified Song Backup .wav to a separate harddrive, a usb or data CD/DVD etc. It's probably a good idea to do a checksum of the orignal 'successful' .wav backup first, then see if the checksums match on the media data copies.

All this works with a VS1880, But will it work with other VS units?

I'm pretty sure that the 1680 and 880 series should work the same as 1880... I would guess that if a VS does not include the DAT backup as an option, that would be a big clue.

The only caution I've seen in the 1680 manual about what will and won't work has to do with the playback system that alters the sound -

Quote:
DAT recorder:
You can use a conventional DAT recorder. Other digital
recording devices such as MD recorders or DCC recorders
cannot be used to back up data. You cannot use a DAT
recorder that alters recorded data during playback; for
example, DAT recorders featuring internal digital signal
processing.
End Quote.

I used a DAT backup/recovery with my 880 back when, and would imagine the SPDIF > PC will work just the same. If there is no VS SPDIF DAT backup, then it's hard luck.

Yeah, as long as you can record the raw S/P-DIF stream, any device should work.

Agree gyorpb.

Further spdif 1880 findings:

1. A 500mB 1880 song spdif backup to PC is about 940mB, stereo 44.1kHz, 16-bit.

2. Turn off backup wait mode, or you will end up with a 1.3gB file.

3. Do not switch on any household appliances when backing up/song recovery mode, as you risk corrupting the spdif stream. I've witnessed it a couple of times, and it's frustrating with a large file. Wonder if it's the same with a DAT tape backup?

I bought me an audio CD recorder just to be able to do that with my trusted old 880ex, but NEVER ended up with a single working backup. So I consider this way to go rather risky, but feel happy for you that it seems to be working!
