This item used to be a link in this forum's "Community / Artist Links", but we've recently added a bunch of links there, and this didn't fit anymore. So, I've created this nice "sticky" thread to keep this info at the top of the forum.
VS-880EX FAQs These FAQs were written for the VS-880EX. However, most things apply across the 880/890 series of VS recorders.
Documents and Downloads Here are a bunch of documents and downloads. Some are from Roland, some are from other Planteers, and some are ones I created. Manuals, User Guides, Procedures, References, and lots more.

I just became the proud owner of an 800EX courtesy of my neighbor who upgraded to a 1680. It was used very little and has no external drive or burner...I've been hacking around on it and trying to avoid having to learn "Rolandese"...so far I've mixed and downloaded a few bass and drum parts I had created with Cakewalk Express...ran them from my soundcard to inputs on the 880 and it worked incredibly well...I'm in the process of overdubbing guitar parts and just know that bouncing and trying to do and internal mix is going to be a challenge...can I mix internally on the 880EX?..in other words mix and save to the internal hard drive?..yes, I'm still reading the manual...wow. Looks like a great place!

Hi Tubes_no_more, ..
Please feel very "Welcome" at the VS Planet .. It's a big world out here .. There is a " search " function at the top of these pages to ..
These PDF pages explain on page 7 & 8, how to bounce (mix) tracks down to a stereo pair of tracks .. (PDF stands for Adobe Acrobat reader files)
Good to hear that you are enjoying your VS-recorder so much,
Hano

Hook,
Thanks for all the stuff and information.
As a beginner it is a most wonderful source. As I am progressing it is still proving extremely valuable all the time.
As always, Brian

I am about to purchase a VS-880ex, but I need to know whether people think it would be suitable for a rock band to record a demo?
Also does anyone have any CD-r burners they'd recommend for use with the VS-880ex?
cheers

Is the 880EX suitable for a rock band demo? Absolutely.
CD burners come in 2 flavors: SCSI burners and stand-alone burners. There is info in the FAQs on both of these , along with the pros and cons of each.

Is the 880EX good enough to record demos? My music partner and I recorded a CD a few years ago. Twelve songs were recorded in a professional studio, but two songs were recorded in a bedroom in my home using the 880EX. The producer was very much against the idea of "home recordings", but he really thought the two songs stood up.
Also, after years of killing myself with endless bouncing to a stereo pair for CD burning, I connected a Tascam CD-RW700 using coax digital. It felt like total freedom to me to be able to mix all eight tracks without extra bouncing.

Gary, I'm a "newbie". I have a VS880EX and a external Plextor 12/10/32. When I press Song under the "Edit Condition" several times, it comes to SNG CD-R Write ? ... I press Yes and get a message saying "Scanning CD-R" and then I get a message "No CD-R Drive". Any Ideas / Manuals that could help me ? thanks Dave

Joek & Arsenal...
I was steered by ROLAND to the QPS CD RACK.
It is a scsi connector burner. I just screwed in the SCSI cord and fired it up. Have used it for all backup, recovery, and burning. It has worked well. I am not sure if there are faster units... This one seems to be slow at most tasks. Still I must report it has been most reliable.

Thanks for this post! I just received a VS-880VX. The Operating Procedure had me recording within the first hour of me messing with the equipment.

Hook,
I need to say how much I appreciate your continued commitment to this BBS. I'm due to receive my first VS, in the form of a used VS-890, expected to deliver by this Saturday. Having owned a few Roland products since new (circa 1988 through 1990), I know their documentation isn't always the best to understand. I'm excited about dusting off my old Roland A-80, and hitting the ivories again for some long overdue recording! Thanks for providing this wonderful online resource.
- Mike

Hey,
I have looked through this, and i still have a quick question. In the guide it quickly touched on this, but did not go into depth.
How might one go about setting up their VS880EX through an editing program/application on a mac G5? I have two midi cables, a midi interface (2x2), which also goes out to USB. Is there a way to assign the tracks through the VS880 to the tracks of Logic, Cubase, or some other software?
Thank You so much in advance!

Great resourse. I'm still in the shopping stage. The table of features in this FAQ is terrific. I spent a lot of time at the legacy products page on the Roland site. It's great that they still show this level of support for machines that are ten years old but it's hard to determine what the differences are between some of the models (generic description) and what are available options, software upgrades and such.
I'd love it if the FAQ were extended to include the VS-840 line and the 1680/1880... products as well.
The info on this forum about updating to CF cards is terrific! That really extends the useable life of these machines.

R: Hi Dave, In order to burn CD's towards a SCSI CD-R drive, you need to power up the CD writer first. Check that the SCSI ID on your CD writer is set to number 4. The CD writer also needs to be terminated. Set the Terminator switch to On. In some cases, when a new CD-R is inserted (we call them coasters) it just won't work. Load a new CD in the tray, and go back to the Song menu. Go to SNG CD-R Write, and try it again. Succes, Hano

You'd mark the beginning of the track as the START point, the end of the track as the END point, then use TRACK ERASE.

Here is my issue ( well with my recorder BG ) I am using a Fujifilm Plextor, says it was built in 2003. I have 2 problems when I go to record ,just burn a playable only CD, it gives me the song + final only...never gives me the choice to save without final or it cancells the procedure. The big problem is that if I just save and final, the recording sounds like Alvin and the Chipmonks.. I have no control over the recording speed and can't fogure out what to do to change it..

BURN ON THE FLY STRAIGHT TO AUDIO CD
how do you do this? i have a fuji burner.
i have an 880ex. i know how to mix to a stereo pair and then CDR WRITE, but on occasion it would be handy just to mix 8 tracks right to a cd to save time.

I have a VS-880EX. Can this unit be connected to a PC or MAC with a MIDI to USB cable to burn CD's and for software upgrades? My zip drive is toast.

Hi,
You really should have started a new topic, since folks will probably not see it tagged onto the FAQ post. But I see this is your first post, so:
1 - NO! I have the same unit, and love it. But audio is not sent via MIDI. To be techincally correct, it *could* be used to send *any* data, if both ends (units) were programmed to accomplish that. I wrote some SW a long time ago to transmit samples over MIDI from an Atari ST to a Korg DSS-1 synth, but to get 5.5 seconds of audio (in mono) it took several minutes!
The MIDI port on the 880EX is used mostly for synchronization between a 880EX and other things such as another unit, a computer running a sequencer, a hardware sequencer, etc..
2 - *** The software upgrade to the EX *CAN* be performed, and probably should be performed via MIDI.
Welcome to the board, although you joined at a time when the board may actually vanish soon. Check out the Waza___ Bar and Grill forum for details. It's the off-and-on-topic forum on this site which most folks participate in daily.

Hi guys, I've owned a VS-880Ex for 12 years & never had problems with anything. Last week out of nowhere, the workstation just switched off on its own & wasn't able to switch it on again. Checked the cable, nothing's wrong with it. Anyone has a schematics diagram for the VS-880EX so that I'll be able to take it to some technician of sorts?
thanks Adrian

My guess is it's the power supply. There are still Roland Authorized Service Centers - if you can find one, they can probably replace it for you.
Sadly, the price of a used VS-880EX might be cheaper than what it costs to get your repaired.
