Hey there! Long time lurker on the forum and just now getting the nerve to mod my first version VS-880 to a CF or SD reader as well. I too am having trouble locating any info on finding a solution for my VS-880 with a 50 pin IDE. I guess we are not alone afterall! Would also really appreciate any help.
These items from the same ebayer look promising but not sure they would work with a 50 pin. I am gonna reach out to them. Fingers crossed
The 50-pin IDE connector in the VS machines has the same pinout as a standard 40-pin connector, plus some extra power and ground pins. All you need, is a ribbon cable with a 50-pin connector on one end, ignoring the extra pins.
Interesting...forgive my ignorance but are you saying a ribbon with 50 pin on one end and 40 on the other? Would you mind sharing an image of one for reference?
Yes. Get a standard 40-pin IDE ribbon cable. Cut off one of the connectors (or leave it dangling); crimp on a 50-pin connector, leaving pins 41 thru 50 unconnected. There’s your VS IDE cable.
Also look into SCSI2SD. It’s a small board which connects to your external SCSI port and functions as an external drive. There is some setup required to make this work, but it’s a one-time thing.

Afaik, it's not that easy to get working adapters and readers, at least that was the case with the older CFs. Not every combo worked.
There ARE IDE ssd on the bay (at least here in Germany) at something liek 30$ - but I never heard of someone using them.
Probably, the idea of dkfackler might be the best, because you can use this thing as SCSI sd drive for a lot of things (I use an older version, where it sometinmes is difficult to use more than one partition on der SD, but love it nevertheless).
It prolly depends on how much to spend for the old machine...
