CD Replacement

I need to ask for a bit of help replacing the CD device in my VS2480CD. System rev level is 2.504 I see lots of information on the Forum talking about this subject but nothing that has worked so far.
Failure info: The CD device that started all this quit working when trying to load a wav file using the Wav Import function. I can hear activity in the CD unit and it chugs along for maybe 1 minute and then displays an error box saying “No CD Drive”.
Here's the backstory: Way back, after years of working perfectly, the original CD drive quit and I successfully replaced it with a UJ-870 (See Pic #1) This replacement drive worked for a long time but recently that one quit as well. So I got on Ebay and bought a replacement - UJ-840 (See Pic #2) but when installed that one didn't work either. Same error message.
NOTE: Use this DropBox link to see the pics. https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/rrusv6p09...t=c96wdwu0&dl=0
I got lucky and I found a UJ-870 with the same exact Model No. (including the HW and FW numbers (whatever they mean)) as the failed UJ-870 unit that started this whole mess. I figured that maybe if these numbers were identical to the one that had worked for years then it might work. So, I installed it. Same result. No good.
I'm sure that what I just typed is confusing so in summary: UJ-870 started it off by failing (Pic #1) UJ-840 1st replacement attempt – Failed (Pic #2) UJ-870 2nd attempt (Exactly the same Model numbers as the UJ-870 which started this mess)
I have a work around in place thanks to Bill Casey and VirDis along with Wave Export but I sure would like to get my CD working.
Is there some kind of installation requirement that I need to tweak in the operating system to recognize the drive? I thought that it would essentially install itself. No?
Thank you for your patience with me. I appreciate your help. Len

The VS recorders all require the internal optical drives be set to “master”. AFAIK, this can’t be done by the end user, but must be set by the vendor. The eBay user “virtanen13” has been a good source for these. A quick squint at his eBay store shows some new Panasonic drives in stock.
FYI:
Internal on the VS-2000CD, -2400CD and -2480CD
Note that an internal optical drive must have firmware set to MASTER. AFAIK, this must be set by the vendor; I know of no way for the end user to accomplish this. If anyone here knows how to do this, please share!!
MATSHITA(Panasonic)--
UJDA330
UJDA340
UJ-870 & UJ870QJ REPLACES:
UJ-811, UJ-811B or -B, UJ815, UJ-815, UJ-815B; UJ825, UJ-825, UJ-825-B; UJ-830, UJ-830B, UJ835, UJ-835, UJ-835-
B, UJ-840-S, UJ845, UJ-845, UJ-845-B, UJ-845-S or UJ-845S,and UJ-85JS and UJ-850
Arjan van gog on VSP, used a UJ-875 BXM Master DVD Burner and it worked.
ONLY THE 2480CD/DVD MODELS CAN USE THE DVD AS THERE WERE SYSTEM UPDATES TO ADD THE
DVD CAPABILITY.
One Planeteer reports success with
Matshita DVD model SW-9585-C PATA installed in the Roland CD Rack.

I spent time with this data a while ago but maybe I'm reading it wrong. (Wouldn't be the first time) My take-away from this info is that both the UJ-840 and UJ-870 should work
"Note that an internal optical drive must have firmware set to MASTER. AFAIK, this must be set by the vendor; I know of no way for the end user to accomplish this. If anyone here knows how to do this, please share!!"
Does this mean that the change to the firmware must be made before it will recognize the two drives I mentioned above?

This refers to drive firmware, not the VS firmware. Apologies for the lack of clarity.

Thank you for your response. So...this means that the drive itself must be configured as Master. Is this something that can be specified at the point of purchase? I see no way to do that to the drive itself (jumpers and the like) so I'm thinking it must be something I can require from the purchaser?
Sorry to be so pedantic but I'm a slow learner!!

Excuse my butting in, but I've always been curious (not owning the 2480. myself). But is there any particular reason why a drive's master setting must be done by the seller? What if it's a used drive? Is there any reason why a buyer couldn't make this setting, assuming the buyer is comfortable with such modifications and that it's a software/firmware change and available for download from the manufacturer...... is it indeed a software change, since there doesn't appear to be an external jumper/change to be made?

So far, I have good data about what drives are suitable but nothing on how to order/verify/modify etc a drive set to Master in the firmware. No drive seller that I've found so far even refers to the firmware being set at Master.
Do any of you folks know of a place that's selling these things that can be relied upon to provide the firmware mod?

Swap the CD drive to DVD drive. Bigger backups on one disc instead of many CD's ( "insert disc 2" ... ) OS 2.504 is enough for a DVD drive.
This guy on "fleabay" has a few left. I bought one from him and it works great : D

I asked the seller, virtanen13 about the Máster setting. He assured me the DVD drive would work; he was right.
