I have vs2wav. Send me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Unfortunately, I don't have vstransfer or vscopy.

Hi Des, sent you an email, please send a copy to me also. It sure would be nice if someone could host these online, as the links in earlier posts don't have the files anymore (at least the ones I looked at).

Thanks!

hi there
i still did not get any of the tools from above (my email is s.wyss@hsw.ch, just send what you got... ;-), but i found this tool at the roland homepage.

http://www.rolandus.com/support/genappstools/index.asp?CatID=12&SubCatID=48&ProdID=BR-8

if you connect a scsi-zip or jaz drive with the song material of the vs880, you can convert the tracks to wav files even if they were recorded in a compressed mode (MT-2). works fine!

Very interesting; what size zip disk did you use? Some of the threads on the 840 forum indicate that zip disks over 100meg won't work. SCSI zip drives are REAL cheap on ebay right now...

Thanks!

i use a 1 gb jaz drive. i guess the size of the drive isn't important, as long as your song material fits on it... as far as i know are all iomega drives (100mb/250mb zip & 1/2gb jaz) using the same type of scsi interface, but i tested it only with my 1gb jaz.

I can upload these tools to my web server, but I only have VS2WAV. I don't have any of the other tools. If someone sends them my way, I can upload them so others can download them.

Here is VS2WAV. I'll leave it here for a few weeks, so get it now. I'll leave it longer if it doesn't kill my monthly bandwidth quota.

xray1999, hit me up at des (at) vsplanet.com. Removed the @ to prevent email bots from getting my address.

I have a VSR-880 though, will all these goodies work with the VSR as well ?

Thanks,

Peter

I don't think so, Peter. I do know the Polarsonic software won't work with the VS880EX. I think others have tried to get it to work with the VSR880 with no success. I can't recall for sure though. As stoof said, try it and see. Cheers.

Hi,

OK, I'll see what will work just by trying.

Must admit though, with those various tools popping up,
I've lost sight about which tool does what...

...and what kind of setup is required
(like using a SCSI-card in PC or not etc etc)

OK, so we have these :

- vs2wav
- vstransfer
- vscopy

- vr8 converter (Boss BR8, any use for VS(R)-machines ?)

- EffectsRestore (FX-board related)

Could a kind soul describe in two words what each of these tools can do or is about ?

(mainly w.r.t. transferring tracks to/from a PC)

Thanks,

Peter

I tried a quick experiment with the BR-8 converter program.

1. Connected my SCSI hard drive to the PC.

2. Fired up the BR-8 converter program.

3. When I try to select a partition on my SCSI hard drive (which show as separate drives on the PC), I get an error message saying "Not BR-8 Drive".

The files on my SCSI hard drive are 880EX files, and were recorded in MAS mode.

So, maybe the 880EX file system just won't work with the BR-8 converter...or, external SCSI hard drives won't work with the BR-8 converter.

My guess is that the BR-8 operating system is based on the VS-880 operating system. When the 880EX came along, it was a different OS than the base VS-880. That's why tools like VS-Copy and such would only work on the base VS-880 and not the VS-880EX. Based on this, my guess is that the BR-8 converter program won't work with the 880EX and above.

But, we'll never know for sure until someone tries to connect a SCSI Zip drive (formatted on the 880EX) to the computer and see if the BR-8 converter will recognize it. If it does, then the question is whether MAS, MT1, and MT2 recording modes can be converted or not.

hi hook
i tried the same with my scsi jaz, and first it did not work. but then i figured out, that the jaz disk has to be formatted (initialized) by the vs880ex. then it works fine... (at least with my vs;-)

stoff,

That's good news. Were you able to convert any MAS or MT1 songs?

I have been playing with the BR8 converter lately, and have successfully converted both MT1 and MT2 files to wav files. The only difference I saw is that the converter Data Type displays MT2 when converting those files, but is blank when converting MT1 files.

The converter would not work on a CDROM backup, nor on my laptop's hard drive (reports Not BR8 Disk). But it did work well on an external SCSI Zip 100 connected via PCMCIA to a laptop, and on an IDE Zip in a desktop.

Another cool feature is that you can import a wav file into an MT1 or MT2 song. You select an unused track, then press Wav to BR8, select the wav file, and it places the wav in that track. I actually took the converter, converted an MT2 track to wav, then successfully inserted it into an MT1 song, then reloaded it into the VS-880.

The Zip disk I used was initialized by the VS-880.

My next experiment will be to initialize a new MT1 song on a Zip disk, then use the BR-8 converter to load wav files from a PC sequencer into the blank song, then load them back into the VS-880.

BTW I am using Zip 100 drives due to their low cost on ebay right now. I bought the SCSI drive for $9.99 plus shipping, and the IDE Zip drive for $1.99 plus shipping. Also bought some new disks for around $3 each. However, due to the limited 100MB on the zip, stoff probably has the better idea using a jaz drive.
