Hi - not sure that I have a solution.

But to start with, disconnect the cd drive from the VS, while you troubleshoot. The VS will boot a bit faster.

Not sure where the info is, but I recall the 1680 having the ability to run off an external hard drive (connected to the scsi port), with the internal drive removed and that there might be a way to turn it off...... Maybe that's all in the service manual, if not in the full owner's manual.

At any rate, I'm not sure how a person can turn off the internal drive, if it's a software switch.

Are you using a traditional 2.5" spinner hd, or an sd card mod? That could certainly be something to consider.

If a traditional hd, you might try (with the power turned off) removing and then reseating the internal drive once or twice.

Update:
Check chapter 12 of the 1680 owner's manual - Making Global Settings...

Quote:
Even when there is no hard disk installed in the VS-
1680, it still can be used with only a Zip drive connected
to the SCSI connector. In such instances, it takes
approximately 30 seconds after the power is turned on
of the VS-1680 to check its internal hard disk connection
status. To avoid this wait, you can preset the VS~
1680 not to attempt to use the internal hard disk.
'E. Hold down [SHIFT] and press [F5 (SYSTEM)].
The System menu icon is displayed. If the System
menu icon does not appear, then press [P6 (EXlT)].
2. Press [F2 (GLOBL)]. If ”GLOBL” does not appear
in [P2], first press [PAGE] until ”GLOBL” is displayed,
and then press [Pf-Z. (GLOBL)].
3. Press [], [], [ ], and [ > ] to move the
cursor to ”lDE Drive,” then rotate the c
TIME/ VALUE dial. t

When not using the internal hard disk, set this to
"Off." Normally, this is set to “On.”
Q. Hold down [SHIFT] and press [STORE (ZERO)].
“STORE OK?” appears in the display.
5. Press [YES].
The song is saved.
6. Press [PLAY (DISPLAYH.
Return to Play condition. The changed setting
becomes effective.

I copied this info from pg189 of the pdf manual.

I'm not positive, because it's been ages since I considered this, but I believe a zip drive is not the only external scsi type you could use - but that any scsi/ide/or correctly modded sd card could be used in place of an external scsi zip drive.

Is it possible that you (or someone who owned or used this 1680 before you) had configured the global settings to use an external drive instead of the internal drive? If so, then finding and connecting an external drive should allow the VS to boot all the way.

From there, you could switch the global setting to ON again.
Then unhook the external drive to use the 1680 as usual.

I don't know if the 1680 can reset itself when it boots, or if it's possible to get to global settings from the message, without first booting up.

Do keep us posted on your situation and hopefully your good success.

Recognize also, that the VS cannot boot from the cd optical drive.
