I have always just mixed down to 2 tracks and never used the mastering room. Is there any benefit to using the mastering room to mix? Is the sound quality better?

I have to admit even though I use external preamps the end result is not as crystal clear as all modern recordings even amateur ones. Any tips in getting clearer mixes?

Thanks fellas

Mastering room is good for organizing songs pre burning to CD.
You still have to mix songs before transfer them to Mastering room ...

When transferring songs to Mastering room you ought to insert
a "plug-in" on the master bus, for example "Mastering Tool" from
VS8F-2 or if you have a VS8F-3 card, Rolands "Mastering Tool"
and choose "Pre mastering" for example.
( It's edit able. Comp, 3 Band EQ, Lo Cut, and more.)
This will enhance the sound quality a bit.

But you don't have to transfer songs to Mastering room to get
this enhanced sound on your final product, you can export
to external gear ( Cd burner, PC / Mac ) via analog out or SP/DIF
just routing master bus to the right output in "EZ ROUTING"
while the plug-in with the "Mastering Tool" is active on the master bus ...

Hope that helps a bit ...

Cheers !

The sound "quality" will not change. There is no reason to use the mastering room except to apply finishing touches to the final two track file. It is a convenient place to apply limiting and EQ - and, as mentioned above, to organize songs into albums.

In other words, the tools available in the mastering room are the same as those available to each project.

Do you guys mix in the box? Wondering if the mix bus has something to do with the "blanket" on the mix quality.

I switched to Studio One, mostly for the editing workflow which is so much easier with the computer interface compared to the VS 2480 system. If your final product is 44.1 K and 16 bits (such as a CD) then either system can achieve that. I think (current) streaming platforms also have limited data "bandwidth" that the Roland can still meet.

I work in 24 bit and 96K now, and I think it sounds better in my room, but that is lost when the music goes online.

I only have one piece of outboard analog gear - everything else is in the box. If you think about the fact that sound waves have ONLY two parameters (frequency and amplitude), then it really doesn't matter how you create the signal that drives the speaker... there is no analog "magic"; it all gets converted to pressure waves in the air.

I've never used the Mastering Room as far as I can remember. If you need any of the manuals or docs, post back, I think I've got pdf files of everything they've published, lol. After reading about it, I'm kinda bummed I never used it. P.S. I just noticed I've got the Mastering the 'Mastering Tool Kit' pdf.

I always use the mastering room for the final tracks. It has the HUGE advantage that you may use tracks 23/24 (e.g.) as tracks in the mix while mixing down to different virtual tracks of tracks 23/24.

The other thing is, taht you can create CD-type tracks which can be burned faster (though I rarely burn more than one CD because copying on the PC ist loads faster).

when recording dont be in a rush..step by step...most recordings today are cut and paste..loses the the soul...live drums are key..step one get the sound your looking for first from the instrument..pre amps warm the signals toms..bass..guitar vc etc..not more than -4 db clean no distortion..i sometimes combine compression/expansion on input signal.. step two solo and enhance instruments if needed on each track with EQ Comp/Expansion panning helps to keep instruments from being in each others way..the phase inversion/normal..very good for separation of similar frequencies..step 3 add aux effects for next level..drums..vc..guitar...step 4 Master stero 2 track mix..2480 gives several..pick through them..choose the one that's closest to what you want and go from there...build the sound...Enjoy the journey

The mastering room is a great way to get your final recording as Loud as most commercial recordings.
