Is DDR5 that much faster --runs less hot ?? Would be advantageous in a small print box ...

Blazingly fast and quiet too.

What do you want to use it for, CJo?

Faster than what? Yes, DDR4 is faster than DDR-3, and DDR-5 is faster than DDR-4. However, there are different speeds for each type/generation of RAM, i.e. 2600/3200/3600 HHz DDR-4, 4800/5200/5600/6000 MHz DDR-5. That's just a clock speed, there's also timing/latency of different RAM.

So, is different RAM faster than others? Yes. Will you notice it? Depends, but I'd venture to guess you would not.

Also, when it comes to speed of a system, there are different factors, mainly processor speed, SSD speed, and RAM speed. In general (very), you'll notice RAM speed the least.

Heat: is pretty much a non-issue for RAM unless you're going to overclock it (you're not).

The desktop in use is about 10 years old ...might be time :-)

I guess the one I am tempting was a TB drive --- just such a small footprint +++ any heat I can keep dissipated >> is why the question of DDR 5...

You can't just pop ddr-5 RAM in any computer and have it make any difference. The motherboard has to be compatible, and for that, you'll need something more modern.

FWIW, the computer you linked to is a 6th generation Intel. We're at 14th generation now (with 15 around the corner), so that's an 8 year old machine.

Also, for what you want to use it for, you should really have a discreet graphics card, IMHO. Any half decent one would cost more than that computer by itself. However, if you select a little more money, you could get an AMD based machine with solid on board graphics, something like a mini pc with a 7840hs, 7940hs, 8845hs, processor, etc, as they all have 780M graphics built in.

Btw, all of the above processors use ddr-5 RAM.

Can I get all that you suggest in a $500 Mini PC ? The desktop to be replaced is very old --- like first generation Intel / WIN 7 --finally updated to 10 & went from 4 gb ram to 16 ...

Generally speaking, you can copy files easily enough. However, you cannot copy programs, because many of them, as part of the installation process, update your registry. So you should plan on reinstalling (and updating) your software as well.

That would be too much for my computer savvy --- As I have said :: never worked an Apple } just way different than the PC architecture ..

AND would never welcome a Company that "forces" the owner to update constantly

I hear the stories from many in town > "Now this software will not work with Sequoia but Monterey still fine?" All the programs I installed in WIN 7 never failed ..

That machine I shared can do that without sweating. Don't forget it has a C-port for dual monitor output using something like a Selore to 2 HDMI adaptor (plus many usb outs etc)

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Docking-Splitte...74&gad_source=1

Also the USB 3 connections can be attached to any portable SSD drive capacity you desire.

You generally can't transfer programs.
There are some programs that attempt it - eg Laplink PCMover, but it is hit and miss, and you will have problems - especially with software versions no longer supported, and where you don't have license codes.
Suggest you don't hire the tech that installed Windows 10 and didn't give you the software licenses

The last two I used >> were in that same vein -- even the store front guy.. Maybe because they can save $ & them licensing WIN..

WIN is only about $50+ --maybe on a thumb drive now ;\)

Can easily purchase a DVD external ++ so I can load my CS ADOBE

If you have the install discs for all the programs you want to load it should be possible - I would not count on finding old versions of stuff on the web - especially photoshop which I believe is all subscription now.

And win10 itself is getting obsoleted pretty soon.

I do wonder if one of the little minis with built in graphics has good enough graphics hardware for hardcore photoshopping...depends on your needs I guess.

It probably would not be good enough for some professional graphics designers.

It is an important point. The one I linked to has an AMD 7840HS processor, and that has 780M onboard graphics, which is about as good as any onboard graphics gets, as good as lower end (now) discreet processors, such as a GTX 1650, and I'd guess better than what CJo has now. It's about equivalent to Apple M2 Pro/M2 Max processors in power, though the graphics aren't quite as good (but pretty close).

https://nanoreview.net/en/cpu-compare/apple-m2-pro-vs-amd-ryzen-7-7840hs

A Mac Mini, with 24gb of RAM (vs 32) would run about $1,400. I'm not saying the UM780 xtx is as good as the Mac Mini, but it's not too far off in terms of processing power, and for about 40% of the price. Not to mention, the Mac isn't expandable, and the Minisforum is (it has a second M.2 slot, and RAM is expandable to 64gb). Another option, if desired in the future, is that you can run a discrete graphics card via an OCulink port.

None of this matters, of course, because CJo isn't going to buy anything. \:D

Just don't even bother, you're not gonna get it going.

This is nothing but being par for the course whenever someone gets a new computer; it has nothing to do wit the computer, only the user. It doesn't matter what computer you buy, you have to install your software/programs. It's not on the computer manufacturer to make it work, it's up to you.

One of the issues you will run into is that you're using outdated software that is no longer supported, and your license(s), if you have one, might not be transferrable, if even available.

Also, do you realize you'll be moving to Windows 11? That should be a hoot! \:D
And don't even think about trying to go back to/use Windows 10.

And, if by chance you do actually buy that system, or any other like it, make sure to go to the manufacturers website and download all of the software for it, which is Windows and the drivers-it doesn't come with discs, AFAIK, many things don't in this day and age. Also, make sure to locate your license for Windows and keep it someplace safe. Then again, it's pretty likely you'll be returning the computer, so...

Best of luck!
