I'm cautiously excited about this--It's hard to make the midi strings sound as expressive as I want, and at a few points it might just sound like a couple of notes randomly overlapping, but when performed by a live string quartet, I think the shape of it all will be clear.
This has the final verse too--still a tad iffy about a line or two but they are probably fine. My goal is to have everyone open their wallets and dig deep, and bring a dog home within the next few days. This animal sanctuary is amazing and it isn't even fully constructed yet--she has over 70 puppies, most of them had been left for dead on the side of the road. Some were born there in the pouring rain with no real rooftops over their heads until just last week.
Anyway, this isn't a keeper recording, just a demo I'm doing for the 1st violinist to ponder.

In just made a big breakthrough decision--I'm going to score the whole for string quartet and voice and NOT play the piano. Just me standing at the mic in front of the string quartet.
Here is the extended arrangement demo, just voice and strings:

And just the string arrangement that I keep tightening up:

Lovely song, poignant lyrics. I hear you repeating the lyric "good boy" a second time at 2:02. Sort of like in the movie Babe when Hoggett says that I'll do pig... that I'll do. Just what I hear. Thanks for the listen.

Thanks, I'm happy. Trying to pull together the string quartet players right now.

Love the song, very touching, great little twist at the end. I just love it.
The strings take away some of the melancholy vibes for me. It’s a bit busy with a few too many figures in between. Perhaps the real ones might add that sadness back in.
I’d put this in the vein of “When She Loved Me”, a heartbreaking masterpiece from Toy Story, a Randy Newman gem.

Thanks, Kelly. That is mindblowing praise.
Re the strings, I was worried about the same thing and then I listened to the real strings on A Forest Of Americas and I'm not worried anymore. There is a level of nuanced emotionality that happens with the actual instruments, whose textures enhance as opposed to detract like these primitive samples. I heard it so clearly this morning that my worry went away.

Well, yesterday I had my first and only rehearsal with the string quartet. Oddly enough, the most professionally experienced player – a gringo who was concertmaster for yani for 20 years and did lots of studio work – Was the one who made the most mistakes. If you add up the total ages of the other three players, I bet we’re looking at about 85 years old.
It was very fulfilling to hear my first string quartet chart performed. Kelly was correct, it does subtract from the melancholy, but the people who have heard our rehearsal or moved and excited. This will be much better for the benefit concert Saturday night. I will go into the studio with the strings but I’ll also record just a voice and piano version so that I have both options.
I’ve been hanging out with this wonderful woman, a painter. She came to the rehearsal and was a fly on the wall and also videotaped. Coincidentally, I had just finished my first demo the day before I met her for the first time, and I played it in the car as I was giving her a ride home, about seven weeks ago. So she’s been in on this song from the beginning. The strings made her tear up.
