Oh, FTB, Ahab The Arab was a cool novelty tune but Ray Stevens is certainly not a one hit wonder. I especially like his tune "It's Me Again, Margaret".

Oops this belongs here:

when i was a wee lad there were always novelty songs and instrumentals on the radio - whatever happened to those tunes?

They fell between the cracks when, in the early 70s, radio stations began strictly defining their broadcast genres.

When I was a kid, you could hear Purple Haze (Hendrix) followed by Strangers in the Night (Sinatra) followed by A Boy Named Sue (Johnny Cash) without turning the dial.

Anyone wish to start a new thread? NOVELTY TUNES

Anybody remember a kinda catchy but stupid little novelty tune called "Double Barrel?" By David & Ansel Collins? They had fun spinning the effects knobs in the control room (reverb? slapback?)

It sounds like the kinda thing somebody would record once they finished recording all the songs they booked studio time for, but still have 10 minutes of recording time left on the clock... But it was weird fun and the fx were truly a novelty at the time.

For some reason, after not hearing it for at least fifty years, I woke up one morning recently with that one playing in my head. Sheesh! The power of music!

Purple People Eaters!

My very young brain couldn't distinguish whether the aliens who ate people were purple, or whether the aliens only ate purple people.

That's another song where the alliteration is what makes it fun.

Not really a hit, but "I've Been Waiting" by Matthew Sweet is pop rock perfection. Anyone heard that?

I bet you'd like it!

Posting a link rather than the video so that I'm not thread jacking quite so much: https://youtu.be/oY5WfUjA6RE?si=lBemg2EaeXIAGDR4 BONUS: It contains quite a bit of footage of my shiny bald head \:D

Fabulous segue between my favorites -- those harmonies have been worked out to perfection !!
