I have a Yamaha S90 for sale. It has a hardshell Gator case like this:

Do you think it can be shipped in this case?

Without other boxing and padding? I have no idea, but that's a not a lightweight keyboard.

I've only ever shipped one keyboard (and probably 20+ guitars), but it was a lot lighter. I put it in it's original box, inside a Reverb box with Styrofoam, etc., and it went east coast to west coast with no problems.

I know that is probably useless information, but there it is. I wouldn't ship it unless it's in a box just to CYA in case of a claim, etc.

All the best, whatever you do.

I see people claim you can ship just using the case but I don't know. Something troubles me about that. Although a case with wheels would actually be easier for those handling during transport.

I posted an AKAI AX80 many years ago. It was big and heavy. I Sold it on eBay. I wrapped it in bubble wrap and then crafted a box around it (an old TV box) then it was parcel taped almost 50% all the way around the joints and corners.

When I took it to the post office (this stood shoulder high!) I got a lot of weird looks from people in the que.

Anyway... The guy who bought it complained that I had packed it so badly because two of the function buttons were not working.

Lucky for me that I could tell him that it was a common issue with the AX80 and posted a link to instruct him how to fix it.

Yeah! - Posting big stuff gives me the shits

I would put that case inside a larger, sturdy box and surround with bubble wrap. Doesn't an S90 weigh in at close to 70 lbs?
I have a Motif ES8 that weight about 75, and I think they have the same weighted keyboard, but the S90 has less electronics (no sequencer, etc).

Maybe test it out first by packing yourself in it and shipping to Hawaii.

Does the case lock? Would you buyer care if there are a bunch of mailing stickers on it. If both answered are yes, than ship away.

No, don't ship it without a box. If you do, and it gets damaged or the buyer says something is wrong, and you put in a claim, you'll lose. It's as simple as that.

When I get back from Hawaii, I'll look into constructing some sort of box. It gets tricky because the case is part of the sale so it should be protected somehow to avoid issues. Maybe I'll be lucky and it ends up a local sale. That would be ideal. BTW Keyboard and case is 85 lbs.
I might put some Ozempic in the case to see if it lightens things up a bit. Oprah is cheaper to ship nowadays.

Thanks for the input.

Maybe head to your local G.C. or mom and pop place. Maybe they have some boxes of that size.. Or a tv box.

No! I’ve shipped several. Get a bunch of cardboard and create a box.
Wrap it with the reinforced tape.
Label the box as “fragile”

Don't use FedEx.

I usully wrap things in bubble wrap in the case. Then put the whole thing into a second bigger bubbl-wrapped box or case. Always think Ship as if going to Mars.

Buy a refrigerator, unpack it. Fill the empty fridge box 1/3 full of a 50/50 mix of styrofoam and circus peanuts. Put the keyboard in the box and fill around it with another 50/50 mix of styrofoam and circus peanuts until it’s filled to the brim. Close it up, use gaffers tape and a nail gun to seal up the box and ship away. Then find a buyer for the fridge.

I would not advise shipping it in just the case. I have a similar case for my Telecaster which got destroyed by a commercial airline.

What everyone else said: the keyboard in the case, the case inside bubble wrap, the bubble wrap inside a box, lots of tape, mark fragile.

OTOH, I've received amplifiers from GC Online that shipped to me in a cardboard box that just fell apart when I touched it and the amp inside - no bubble wrap, no nothing, just in a box - was in pristine shape. So ... who knows.

I went to UPS. They "claim" it is fine to use just the case.
So I changed my Reverb ad noting the case would be used as the shipping container.
A box for this is impossible to come by, it would have to be
24 x 12 x 72. Plus it is easier to handle in just the case.
So there it is, wish me luck. LOL

You are supposed to make your own box, newbie….not find a box that is the perfect size already.

Do you own a box cutter? That is the first step.

Second step - find some boxes to cut up and make a really big shipping box.

Third step - buy 4 rolls of bubble wrap and 17 rolls of packing tape and bubble wrap the case and tape that monstrosity of a cardboard box together and ship.

Easy peasy.
