Now that I'm retired, I finally have time for my music hobby again. I have started to re-master my Roland VS-1824CD with the help of the manuals and the book "Roland VS Recorder Power" by Skelnik, Gibbs and Frick. I also like to use the VS Wave Export software, but apparently it doesn't work with Windows 11 anymore, so for export of the tracks I now have to rely on the digital-out to transfer track by track. Although I can connect my external scsi hardisk to the PC, that is no longer useful now that VS Wave Export no longer works for me. There is a lot of trouble to unzip the software and you need to disable disable te windows virusscanner. After starting the software as administrator i get System Error &H80004023 (-2147467229) for Microsoft Software Installer. If any of you can get this software to work under Windows 11 pro, would you like to contact me?

Sorry I do not have a win11 machine so can't try it - but I would not doubt that some stupid protection in win11 is keeping it from working. I am avoiding win11 as long as possible.
Could you install some older version of windows under virtual box or similar maybe?
A quick look at the error number on google does give some suggestions at least in WIN10 to get around it.
The visual basic MSCOMCTL does need to installed to run - lots of people run ito that - I am not sure if this can even be done in WIN11

Bear, Thanks for reply. I try to find out how to setup MSCOMCTL. Maybe this is the missing link.
The Windows Virusscanner removes Cd2Roland.exe which contains a VirTool:MSIL/CryptInject
Is Cd2Roland.exe needed?

Hi Don,
I got VS Wave Export to work. I have MSCOMCTL.OCX Downloaded from the Microsoft side and placed it in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64 folder.
In PowerShell I ran the following commands: CD C:\WINDOWS\SYSWOW64 [Enter] regsvr32 mscomctl.ocx [Enter]
I created the ExcludeVirusScan folder and excluded it from Microsoft Defender Antivirus in Windows Security. In the ExcludeVirusScan folder, I renamed the VSWE1.24a file in VSWE.zip and extracted it to the VSWaveExport folder. As a result, Cd2Roland.exe will not be removed by the Defender. Now, when I double-click on the file "VS Wave Export.exe" in the VSWaveExport folder, the application starts without any error messages under Windows 11 Pro 23H2.
Maybe you can adjust Cd2Roland.exe a little bit so that the Windows Defender no longer recognizes it as a virus.

Today I connected my external SCSI hard drive (song vault) to my PC with Windows 11 pro via a SCSI-USB2 adapter. If VS Wave Export is started as administrator, you will see all partitions (I have 8 partitions) on the SCSI hard drive in the "Roland drives and files" box . If you're booting as a regular user, the slot will be empty and you'll need to drag and drop one or more VS-880ST25B drives into the slot (note that the windows explorer sees only the first 4 partions as drives). Export works fine, but the exe file that Pack creates gives the error Runtime error '76' path not found. The latter is not a problem because you can also pack the exported files yourself with, for example 7-zip or Iexpres (part of Windows 11). For quick access, I linked the VS Wave Export program to the Windows Start menu.

The problem with cd2roland is that in order for windows to see roland backup discs some really low level code in windows must be accessed
Windows (especially win10 and later) just hates allowing this - for good reason. But it is really the only way I know to see the data in the non-standard CDs roland makes
It MIGHT be possible to do it some other way - but that project is abandoned 12 years ago - and meant to run in XP. It is a miracle it still works at all....
I have no interest in roland VS recorders anymore...I see no reason for anyone to even use them these days.

A reason? Since 1979 I have been programming with a computer for more than 8 hours a day. It is now time to finally stop doing that and broaden my horizons. The VS-1824CD with all its limitations gives me back what it was all about: making music. I like to sit in the garden on a sunny day with the Roland VS-1824CD with only a Stratocaster, guitar cord, headphones and a push pedal for record. A glass of white wine within reach watching the birds, the bees and the flowers and then playing. That's heavenly!
