Happy New Year everybody! I could use some help thinking through a question that has arisen in my mind.

I am using my 1680 to record, and then piping everything over to PC using Virdis. (Wav export) where I will be mixing the project.

I like to A/B my mixes against a commercial CD in the flavor of what we're doing.

I have a big knob unit which allows me to select two different sources. One is the PC mix, and the other one is the VS material.

I'm thinking of just taking the two RCAs on the back of my CD player, and running them into the VS using an adapter to 1/4. Or maybe even yet, I should just take two RCAs to quarter inch and run it into track 15/16 for example.

The big knob that lets me select either the PC or the VS, goes off to powered monitors so nothing's amplified until it hits the monitors.

I'm going to give this a try I think next weekend but do you think it's sound reasoning? I have run a CD player through a channel on my Mackie board for live gigs, and I think this would work the same way.

Just floating this to see if there's anything I'm substantially off on, theory wise.

TIA

Just a couple ideas to note -

On the VS, I'd use logical pairs of inputs - 3/4, 5/6, so that you can link the channels for panned stereo control with just one fader (the left one). The 7/8 pair might not be convenient, if you also use the hi-z input next to ch8. But maybe the only hassle might be a one time routing configuration in the VS.

Hopefully, your cd player's output is high enough so that you can leave the VS attenuaters fully counter clockwise to minimize coloration and preamp base noise from the VS preamps.

Also, be sure to leave the input mixer EQ off (or turn off) on that channel pair.

If your pc/laptop (?) has a decent interface, or line input, I might consider connecting the cd player through it instead. I could imagine using the big knob as your A/B selector that way. It would free up a pair of VS jacks, in case you use more than 2 or more live inputs at once (say for recording mic'd drums).

Thanks so much Dan! That's actually very helpful. I'm going to try it this weekend! I'll work it out somehow, not sure which of the above options... Sincerely appreciate your input!
