last friday i played a "money round" at a 7013 yard course called "the frog" outside atlanta. my "nemesis" and i teed off in 20-30mph sustained winds and the temp never got out of the 40s. my "nemesis" had never played golf in the atlanta area before, so we placed our bets and opted to brave the conditions and get it on. ---------------------------------------------- here's how the money side of our game works -
$100 for lowest total score
$10 each for -
greenies -(closest to the pin on par 3s if par is made) polies -(dropped putts that are longer than the flagstick) sandies - (up and down out of the sand) par strings -(after 3 pars, each addl par is $10)
$20 each for -
birdies chippies -(holing out from off the green) snake -(last person to 3 putt)
par strings DOUBLE all of the above's cash value, k? ----------------------------------------------
anyway, i hit my first tee shot into the gusting 30mph wind and my eyes immediately teared up to where i couldn't even see while the ball was in flight - gnarly!
but - check out the scorecard so far...
par - 4 4 3 5 5 4 4 3 4
me - 5 5 3 5 5 4 4
he - 5 5 3 4 5 4 4
the next par 3 is playing dead into the wind with the tee marker at 226 yards and a back pin placement to a very small area of the green. there is water right off the back of the green and waste area all the way to the green. it's slightly downhill, but the wind has the hole playing over 260, k? my competitor hit driver into the hill on the left in hope that his ball would roll off the hill onto the green. well, it made it to the hill, but not nearly long enough, so he had a significant pitch to the pin. i normally fade my driver and this shot set up perfectly to my eye. while the wind was high, i was a bit nervous about unleashing a drive because it could've made it to the water behind the green if i really caught it. i hit driver anyway and ripped the ball into the wind, slightly left of target. once it got up into the wind, the ball began to climb and float right. when it reached the apex of its flight, the wind stopped the ball in mid air and dropped it about 12 feet right of the flag - SOFTLY - and the ball rolled left to about 10 feet from the hole. at this point, we were both on par strings and if i could hole the putt, it was worth greenie, polie, birdie and string for a total of $90. i dropped the putt and the nemesis got a triple bogey. i went on to the next hole and polied my par putt for another $30. anyway, i shot 37 in some very heavy conditions. the back was a different story cuz the weather was really wearing on us. i shot 48 on the back for a total of 85 and sufficient to net myself $250 on the day. while 85 isn't all that impressive, the length and difficulty of the course, coupled with the grueling wind and cold, this was one of the most satisfying rounds i've ever played - and i gotta hand it to my nemesis for bringing on a great competitive round riddled with drama. he started out with the lead after 4, went down for awhile and came back to within 1 stroke at the 17th tee, but i took the prize in the end - yeeeee haawwww!

Great story! Non-golfers might not get it, but I love reading stuff like this.

marty - aces are $100 ( none of us has pulled one off in 6 years of playing together).
eagles are $50 - several of those have happened.

Nice round. The wind can really wear you out. You had great consentration to pull that score.

I think I remember that par 3 you were referring to. That's a great hole. We played it once into the wind and I think I bailed out right with a weak fade off a driver. Doesn't that water wrap around the left side a little too? I'm thinking the hill's on the right. Elevated tee...downhill? Huge waste area up to the green? Maybe I'm thinking of a different hole.
I'd love to play that course more often. But it's on the opposite side of town, and a bit pricey. Not so bad on weekday afternoons though. And it's definitely one of the nicest courses around here.

jimmyT - exactly
ickalien - the mind-over-matter thing is what really jazzed me about the day. i played today and couldn't reproduce friday's magic. shot a lackluster 88.
conditions weren't ideal today, either...
