Just outside of town is the largest windmill farm in the United States and I think the world. It surpassed California last year. Here is a picture I took driving down the highway about ten miles from the house. It's really getting to be big business around here.

it is on the radar for development here in Kansas as well. In addition if you drive from KC to Omaha or Lincoln Neb you'll see trucks hauling parts every day.

I'm on the town planning board where I live, and we're very pro wind power development here. We're open and inviting to any company with a project in mind, but there are other areas nearby with higher average wind speeds that are more attractive right now. Still, it's just a matter of time.

You wouldn't believe the strong opposition to wind towers, though. I suppose these folks would rather we build a new nookular plant??

Not in my district! \:D

Truffle,

I was listening to Coast to Coast friday night and there was a guest on there that was making claims that the environmentalists are actually changing their tune about nuclear energy as opposed to coal fired generators. Go figure, guess they felt it was cleaner.

I also saw a program on DIY I believe, where they had this competition of sorts on the mall in Washington DC. These different teams were attempting to construct living quarters that were totally recycled and fossil energy free. There was one design and forgive me if I don't get it exactly right, where this house was run on a Hydrogen generator. Solar panels collected the energy and stored the excess in batteries. THis battery power was used to run a hydrogen generator that split the hydrogens from oxygens in water. Somehow, the end result was energy released in the reunion of the separate molecules that resulted in energy and water...... which was then recycled. Pretty cool! :thumb:

They said that within 10 to 15 years, these generators could be used in homes to produce energy. Why not sooner?

There is a guy in NJ who is off the grid.

He uses solar cells to power hydrolisis (sp?), collects the hydrogen in big tanks, and runs his home gererator/ battery system off of the hydrogen.

Biggest drawback is the dozen or so hydrogen storage tanks in the back yard. But it's safer than propane, I believe....

He built the system himself, using money from a government grant!

You know, the power went off here tonight for about an hour. We had a pretty good time in spite of it. If you were satisfied with old ways and means, you could live off the grid all the time and be happy I think. We lit some candles, built a fire in the fireplace, made some food, and I got out my acoustic guitar.

I'm glad my power came back on though. Ha.

So did you play it? How about did you come up with a melody for one of our tunes. What the hell have you been doing?

Anywho, I think that windmills should be the norm.

Check out the site and gander around. They have a lot of cool enviro stuff.

We can put up our own windmills. Any extra electricity goes to the power grid and your electric company is mandated to pay you for it.

I also remember reading that you can actually get a grant to construct your own power which feeds the grid. You have to pay the start up, but once up and running you can get a huge chunk of your money back.

Between solar, wind, and renewable energy.

Also, on that site they have bio deisel products so that you can make your own, and way cheaper than gasoline. And they have a 'green machine' which you can put on your car to make it CO2 neutral and even get better gas milage.

Wow.

This is the kind of technology that we should all be looking at and investing in.

My electric bill is about double what it was 2 years ago due to the cost of producing the energy.

Unfortunately, my studio, marine aquarium, central air and heated swimming pool are quite the energy users. I have cut back in other areas but changing the bulbs to compact fluorescents hasn't made a big dent.

This summer I'll try to cut back on those biggies despite my wife's complaints.

Marty, you seem like a prime candidate for a windmill!

I can't stand all this pressure. Heh heh. Maybe I'll be motivated this weekend. That's my plan. I have to shop for a new gas range tonight and then come home and watch the finale of Top Chef.

wind is prolly a reasonable safe energy; but have you seen these windmill farms in person? they are giant and scary. everytime i drive through a state that has these, the first thought i have is that it made a nice natural area ugly. there will be hundreds of them too. cant stop staring at them for a while.
