Hi,

Will be doing a band-recording with the VSR-880 soon but
want to 'trick' a few more tracks-at-once than the eight
from the Roland.

I can 'separate' the audio inputs from the sync-source, correct ?

So I could use another recorder (say a two-track DAT-deck),
route the digital out (S/PDIF) from that to the VSR-880,
sync the VSR-880 from that and happily record the eight analog inputs
on the VSR-880.
Having synced the machines should make it possible to align all tracks
later in my DAW.

Hassle perhaps, but could it work just by S/PDIF ?
I guess so, will try it when I'm near the machine.
Comments welcomed.

Thanks / regards,

Peter

Im thinking no without midi synch. I wouldnt think the spdif could sync and record at the same time. Also how do you plan on taking the tracks into the computer. Without Rbus you would need some kind of software like reaper and the vs wave export. With spdif its only 2 tracks at a time. At the price of the vsr's now you may want to think about picking one up.

If you are using VSR-880s WITHOUT a VM-7000 series mixer, then a MIDI cable and a S/PDIF cable are the correct way to hook them up. The MIDI cable will provide location and transport information while the S/PDIF cable will keep the clocks locked to each other and the units in sync.

If you want to sync them in an R-Buss system (example, VM-7000 mixer and 3 VSR-880s) then you would use R-Buss, not the MIDI and S/PDIF cables. Roland's R-Buss takes care of all synchronization functions.

Either way the sync is deadly accurate and lightning fast. What you do NOT want to do is use the R-Buss connection and MIDI or S/PDIF. This is known to cause poor synchronization between multiple machines.

Hi,

Thanks for responding.

The VSR-880 would be synced to the (say) DAT-deck, so two audio-channels are fed to the DAT (analog inputs) and the S/PDIF output of the DAT is free to go wherever to want to go...
... in this case to the VSR-880, which records 8 tracks from its 8 analog inputs, but is 'clocked' from the S/PDIF-input.

There's obviously no 'syncing' between both recorders w.r.t. transport information, but (as is my only concern here and also the only I could hope for with all this) they _should_ be running at the very same pace I'd say, since they share clocks.

Have to look if this setting is indeed doable, I thought it could, but not sure.

The VSR-880 tracks indeed 'elegantly' by external SCSI-HDD & Reaper, and the two 'DAT-tracks' in the hard way (real-time, by S/PDIF into my DAW). No problem for a few tracks.

Would indeed be the nicest thing to do, but they don't pop up too often here in the Netherlands.

And this is for something on short notice... I made a tracking-plan and saw I could use a few more tracks if possible, and then for grins I got thinking about doing it like this.

Hey, and along the VSR-recording mode (hence data-reduction) it's all in style, since the DAT isn't a DAT in reality, but a 18-bit DCC-deck :-)

Keep you posted, regards,

Peter

BTW, I _do_ realize that if something's not healthy or gets out-of-sync, I could end up with just the two DCC-tracks and nothing sensible from the VSR-880 at all. But who doesn't risk things...

Obviously I'll test thoroughly beforehand.

Cheers,

Peter

What settings would have to be changed to sync two VSR880s using S/PDIF and MIDI connections?

I once did a writeup of the various settings to sync two VSR-machines. Let me know an email-address, then I'll dig up & send you the file.

My e-mail address is winemakers@empireaccess.net

I would appreciate the info on the syncing of two VSR880's by Midi and S/PDIF

Thanks.

Here's the full and detailed reply: Linking 2 VS recorders by Midi, and locking up by Coax

Be my guest,
Hano

I'm assuming this doesn't work for the EX?

Geefresh95, It works for all the types of VS recorders.
