There is a big difference using a good outboard pre, even going through the onboard inputs. That being said, I noticed a huge difference when I picked up an A/D coverter (in my case a Lucid 9624). I've been using a Vintech X73i, a Grace 101, and an A-Designs Pacifica, all with nice results.

I connect UA gear straight into the Roland pres Gearslutz will mock me, but the difference is huge.
I am interested in going in digital to bypass the convereters to see if there's another big audio upgrade

The Gearslutz site is just too much. You could own the best gear in the world and still get razzed at gearslutz. I find that site overwhelming most of the time.
Which UA pieces do you have?

the stock preamps work just fine for the most part. external preamps can go into the line inputs and still impart their coloration though. When i'm feeling motivated, I take mine in through a Lucid 8 ch convertor into the AE7000, all clocked by Apogee. Is it better? yes and no.. most folks would be better off worrying about all the other much more important aspects of recording, especially the stuff before the mics

Gearslutz.com is okay - VSPlanet and GS are my two must-visit forums each morning before work. There are a lot of very experienced pros on there with good advice, but yeah, there are a lot of semi-pros or wannabes who talk like they're Daniel Lanois or Chris Lord Alge, so you need to have your BS filter set to stun! ;-) I think a lot of the bitch fights are really just around questions where there is no right answer, just opinions, and people probably justifying their own gear purchases to their own little egos. Or something. So yes, even if you had a fully-recapped Neve 8078 matted to a pair of Studer 827s, they'd be people who'd say you're an idiot!
What amazes me is how much some of the guys there have spent on their home studios. Yeah, if you're a pro engineer or producer then having a couple of hundred thousand bucks worth of gear is probably necessary, but some of these kids literally have pro-studios (or rather, enough gear to fill a professional studio) in their bed/spare rooms. Of course, they need to work on their acoustic treatment more (common reply to the "I have $XXX to spend" threads).
I guess it is called Gearslutz for a reason, but last year in a thread ( http://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/377810-thinking-ditching-computer.html ) about one guy ditching computers and going back to a SIAB (I tried to convince him to a Roland VS, but he got an Akai DPS instead... close enough) in order to focus less on gear and technology and more on recording. A few of the posters and I discussed setting up a web forum called earsnoeyes.com to discuss simple, non-gear-cenric music production.... studio-in-a-boxes, 4-tracks, getting the most out of shitty Behringer gear (!), and the like. I actually registered the domain and started getting things prepared but then life got turbulent (brother took his own life, I had a relationship breakup and moved house, etc.) and I haven't picked it up again yet. Might have to soon.
Gearslutz does have a funny side though - check out this thread -> http://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-g...plies-only.html

LOL! It's not what you know but who!
Few guys walk into a recording studio and they go on and on about how they know this guy and how they know that guy etc and so on and so on.
After about 20 mins worth the Audio Engineer turned around to one of the guys and said 'Gee, you really know a lot about these guys!'.
Yeah mate, I do (big noting himself), in fact I saw some of them on Tuesday night - hey, I might even introduce them to you some day.
The Audio Engineer said no need...
Perplexed the guy said, why not, it might give you better standing in the industry! Being seen with me and mine...
The Audio Engineer said well I saw them on Tuesday night too, at band rehearsal as I am their lead guitarist and you weren't there.
The other guy says, oh it might have been Monday I saw them. The Audio Engineer said well if you come to our Gig this Saturday night we can all sit down together and work this one out and I'll act as mediator because I know both parties!

I read the gearsluts thread about the guy switching. I get a lot of people telling me to go with a computer based unit, but I want to hold on to my 2480. I love what it does for me. While some of my buddies are dealing with crashes and latency and always tweeking their units, mine has been rock solid since the last upgrade.
I got the preamps because I was never satisfied with certain aspects of the pres on the 2480, mainly bass and bass drums. I've just barely scratched the surface with the isa 828 but I can see huge improvements on my overheads, snare and bass drum. I actually prefer the tom sound with the 2480 pres at this point.
The biggest drawback is not being able to get online and order a DIF-AT24 RIGHT NOW!!!
I was even thinking of buying another 2480 if it came with the DIF-AT24 if the price was right. I'd have the box and also a backup 2480.

I've been running through a 6176, but then I got a great deal on an 8110 just as I was about to track some drums....and, well there it is!
I love the VS, but I mayu need to get a VIRDIS in order to brige the gap into a compu with the rest of the world
Next target is a ADDA- the Behringer is a great deal, but I need to find someone to modify the preamps out of the way

I'm enjoying the 828. Huge difference on overheads, snare and bass drum. I was able to get one of the dif-24 boxes so I'll get the A/D converter soon.
Looking at Earthworks mics for drum overheads which should improve my overheads even more.

For what it's worth, I use a Avantone dual LDC and it is awesome. I've had good results with a rode stereo nt4 as well...I like my overheads through stereo mics as opposed to 2 singles

Do you have a link to the AVantone Dual LDC? found the mic line but not that model.

How do you find the stereo spread with the NT4? I've been considering getting one for a while now, figuring it would be great for many uses as well as an easy to use drum overhead... one stand, no phase issues, etc. I'm presuming the panning spread is less hyped than a spaced pair.

I use the nt5's regularly. Really tight sound to me., I prefer LDC mics, but the nt5's can spread the sound well in an xy pattern. I run them through a art mpa with modded tubes and they sound great.

Here's the link to the Avaantone http://www.avantelectronics.com/CK-40%20STEREO%20FET%20MIC.htm
They have 2 versions- 1 I think is dual cardiod, the one I snagged has dual card, omni, fig8
I like the way a stereo mic picks up the entiredrum kit as a whole, rather than pinpointing a ride or hi hat direct rom above ( I don't use any mic on hats or ride, just use the stereo field to capture it).
The Rode can deliver pro results, I read that Frank Filipetti enjoys them and his stuff rocks. That mic absolutely loves acoustics as well.
At one time there was a baycity something or other that gave you a free fathead with a rode nt4, that's a great combo deal.
and of course, the room has by far the biggest impact- give me a great room with a solid player and behringer mics will sound good!

motown59, are you using the lucid to DA out to speakers as well? I see a few of these units on ebay right now for a lot less than the cost of a Apogee 800. Wonder if this would serve me well for my current setup.

Complete nonsense ! where do these people come from ? I did both tests and they both sound fine, going in digital made it thinner sounding, the op- amps made no difference in fact made it sound thicker ! Were going to lose all that greatness with a $3000 preamp ? if we run threw a 50 cent opamp ? doubtful, in fact just BS ! And since the gain knob is down, you may be going threw them but there's no gain added other than the pre amp going in ? IC Chips have more noise and less quality for lows, highs, and mid's not to mention harmonics, and discrete pre amps have less noise ! Go look it up !

I did tests as well and the 2480 preamps were dark and grainy compared to external. A pretty big difference. To each their own.
