In theory you should be able to with the Acard adapter. They have an IDE to SATA. While I have not tried this on the VS2480. I just did it last week with my Akai mpc 4000. The hard thing for me was formatting the SATA SSD to fat32. I was not able to do it with Windows 10. I had to go to a friend with an older desktop and he used an older version of Windows that allowed for the entire 120gig ssd to be formatted. I am very happy with the change.
I was considering what you are thinking but have gone the route of doing it in an external enclosure.
I bought a SAMSUNG 840 ssd.
Cheers, Ian PS ACARD info from an archived thread here... http://www.vsplanet.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=466407

A few years back, I was experimenting with various internal storage solutions and was able to use a SATA laptop drive in the 2480 with a $7 SATA <---> IDE adapter purchased at Fry's. It was truly plug/format/play simple.
At the same time, we tried CF and SD options. These were all tried in the 2000 as well. Some combinations of adapters/cards worked, some did not. Some worked in one machine but not the other.

@Swindus your link is not working for me. Can you please copy and paste the name of the adapter. and the exact type of SSD card not only the brand but the specs?
Thanks, Ian

I have my VS2480 open right now and I am about to make a video of the parts and such as I have just put a Kingston 120g ssd in there.
While I have it open I am considering a replacement fan. Any suggestions on a quiet fan?
Cheers, Ian

did a quick search for "replacement" and found this post of Frank's from last August... I remember having read a few threads that discussed replacement fans..... Hope this helps - courtesy of Frank (RIP):
I saved some specs on quieter fans that will work from others posting them here in the past...

Does the SSD give a significant speed improvement? Or is it mostly about cooler running and lower acoustic noise (like the Roland MVs)?
I just did the SSD conversion on my MV-8800 and it went fine. Not sure if it's also worth doing on the newly acquired VS2480CD.
All advice welcome.

Hi Manalishi, I do not notice an increase in speed. In fact because the SSD I now use is 120gig I notice it takes slightly longer like maybe 10 more seconds to boot up.
Once the machine is on, saving and loading projects is no faster or slower than before. It is definitely quieter. I am considering removing the fan altogether or replacing it. Once I figure out if it is necessary for removing heat from the power supply. Cheers, Ian

Yes, no speed improvements with the ssd here too. I have added a little trimmer to the power line of my fan. This way I can reduce the current and lower the speed and noise of the fan to my taste and still transport the heat out of the VS.

Thanks guys. Will live with it as-is for a while and decide if the fan is too noisy - then maybe do both at the same time.

Unfortunately I don't have the same success. I bought a ”Super Talent” (incredibly silly name for something…) IDE 2.5" 128 GB Solid State drive, mounted it in one of my caddies using a 2.5" to 3.5" adapter card, made sure everything was connected properly and so on. When I start up everything looks fine. It says it doesn't find any formatted drives, which is correct, so try to make it format it. First time I tried, I selected Physical format (maybe that was a mistake?) and it looked like it was working. I know that physical format on the VS-2480 takes quite some time, last time I did it it was like a day or two… So I let it run for about 48 h, but the progress bar hadn't moved at all. After that I tried the quick format but the result was the same. Actually it froze when aborting so I had to shut it down with the power off button.
After that I tried to format a small drive (16 GiB) and it worked fine. It took something like a minute or less (quick format), so the VS-2480 itself seems to work.
Any ideas? Just give up?

I just did it again in a vs2000cd with a 64g ssd (Brand OSZ Vertex 3 6gb/s) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1g3cb2sD4U
works perfectly thus far.
Cheers, Ian

Ok, that was a SATA SSD, wasn't it? I'll maybe try it. So it was just too good to be true then, a 128 GiB (≈137.4 GB, exactly the maximum disk space supported by the VS-2480) IDE SSD ready to plug in and play with only a 2.5 → 3.5 IDE converter needed…
So now I need that Kingston SSD and a SATA→PATA converter, right?
It'll be nice to get rid of most of that noise when recording acoustic guitar, I don't care about speed and things like that, as long as it's not worse than now.
So far, when recording acoustic guitar I recorded it on a Zoom H6, copied the files to my computer, then burned a CD and copied the files to the VS-2480. A lot of time required to just record a few tracks, but the HDD and VS-2480 fan noise (especially the small fan in the caddy) altogether is just way too loud here in my small apartment (34 m²)…
Maybe I'll read through the whole thread when I'm awake next time, going to sleep now.

Looks like one could just remove the caddy. Pull the hard drive then install the SSD. I don't see why the VS has to have screws removed to get in there. Right?

I agree, not sure why the unit has to be taken apart, since everything to do the swap is contained within the hd caddy.

The SSD I tried to install is a 2½" drive and I also tried with a 2½" HDD, 80 GB, neither of them were a success. Those 2½" IDE drives have four pins next to the multi pin IDE connection, what are they? Are they for jumpers or something? Do I need something there for them to work with the VS-2480? Just wondering because so far I never got a 2½" IDE disk to work…

Hi Cantsleep and Blair, When I was first asked about removing the back in the actual youtube video I said it was necessary and I was wrong. My vs was used and there was a lock on the caddy. When you take off the entire underside then you can bypass the lock. Maybe yours won't have the lock. I am sure it can be easily picked. I wanted to go in and show people and myself the interior of the VS2480. Cheers, Ian

I bought the Kingston SSDnow300V and a SATA TO PATA IDE Converter Adapter Plug&Play 7+15 Pin 3.5/2.5 SATA HDD AR. Not working. Is it because of the AR at the end of the converter? I just noticed it does not indicate DVD after HDD. Must be the wrong unit.
