How to create seamless punch ins and outs?

Years ago when I was on here (under different name I can't remember anymore) I thought I remembered seeing a post about how to punch in and out in a way that made it more smooth or seamless. I tried doing a forum search here but didn't come up with anything.
Does anyone remember if it's possible on the 2480/2400 to punch in while recording electric guitars for instance, without having that noticeable glitch that happens most of the time?
Thanks for any help! -James.

My apologies for not giving you a direct answer about punching in... But in my experience, it is by far an easier and cleaner task to record a second take of the part - a line, or a few notes, or a whole section, even - onto either a parallel unused track, or to a virtual layer beneath the main layer. Then use simple copy/paste, or move edits to comp in the section I want to replace.
I find it much more accurate, too and without the messy glitching even becoming an issue.
If only a note or two are needed, it doesn't even matter if the section I play over again is completely accurate, as long as what I want to replace is done correctly, because it's so simple to just splice the good parts in - even small timing adjustments can be made to fine tune to placement more easily, I think.
You might give it a try, or two, or three - and see if you begin to appreciate the process and its advantages.

I have pretty good luck getting seamless punch in's and out's.
Me too. That being said, sometimes if the timing is not just PERFECT then i will get not so smooth punches.
Auto-punch works really well as you can set your in and out points and let the VS punch for you.

You don't have to worry about a punch in being absolutely seamless. Once you have done the punch in the original recording is still there, it's just underneath what you have just recorded. Grab the end of the new phrase with the mouse (not to move the phrase but to reduce it in length, it had a different symbol to moving a phrase) and drag it to wherever it needs to be. Then do the dame at the end of the punch in. I do this in the Wave display view so you can move it a few thousands of a second and align it up exactly so it is completely seamless. Sometimes I don't even bother using the auto punch in as you don't need to be that accurate with the in and out points, just drag them after the recording.
Hope that makes sense.

Thanks guys for the good ideas! I've done both auto punch ins & outs as well as manual punch ins (for when I'm too lazy to set punch points). I'll try out some of the ideas you all presented here when I record my new cd in a couple months.

90% of the time -- its just my finger on the REC button -- if it is really difficult punch ,, I set the LOC numbers with the Auto punch ... Years on reel to reel .. and never venturing into WAV editing

As I said above, you don't have to be that accurate, just move the edge of the phrase to the exact drop in and out points after you have done the recording, the original track is still there underneath the overdub.
