....I donate my sperm. But I feel bad because I usually promise not to.
But in all seriousness, this is a great point/post Moose. I have only donated blood once, but because of your post, I am going to donate again asap.
So simple, yet so important. Thanks for the reminder.

Good question. Donated from 2006 to 2013. When I moved back to Oregon, just forgot. In Duluth, the blood trucks would just park down the road from work. No excuse for me.

also,
my body reacts very badly at having needles shoved into it. and i don't like it one bit either. lol
probably explain why i could never become a junkie!
i lived in Vancouver's skid row for a few years. right out of the army at the time and still in very good shape.
the junkies admired me because i had nice looking veins they were saying. "it'd be so easy to shoot myself if i had veins like yours"
and i was thinking: "the reason why you have no more veins showing up is that you're a living dead".
oh well.

For anybody reading moonie's response:
Your local blood donation service has trained professionals collecting blood. In other words, don't fear the needle. It's a small discomfort at most, and you're potentially saving lives while doing it.

I'm highly susceptible to blood clots. Doesn't take much to get a clot in a vein for me. Not allowed to fly, either.
My wife is a donator. She's O-negative and in high demand. Unfortunately, many times she's unable to donate due to low iron count.
But, speaking of total donations, one of my uncles, that recently passed away at 95, got his 70 gallon pin MANY years ago.
He started at 18, and got his 50 gallon pin just after turning 45.

Until they find out why I have about 2.5 to 3 times the amount of iron in my blood a can't donate. My levels are above 850 units?. I need to be around 260 units? to be normal.
I was wondering why I was always pointing north when I got up in the morning.

And for you men who do, stop by and let me smack your face in. Sheesh, it's always the bad boy-biker-tatted-up-Marlboros-rolled-in-the-sleeve dudes who pass out. I'd piss on them if it didn't get me fired. NOW....get back out there!!!!

"Don't fear the Needle"... does that need more cowbell, too?
I did it a few times, but passed out twice. No fear of needles, ever. Last time, I would get light-headed and dizzy every time I stood up, and that lasted over a week. My doc advised me against doing it anymore.

Very first thing. I do not carry the genetic tags but! my liver specialist says the US medical tests don't do as many markers as the EU so.....who knows?

So the MDs have not yet figured out what is causing your iron levels to be so high? Curious how it is being treated. With hemochromatosis, the treatment is basically blood-letting and low-iron diet. Maybe iron-high and anemic people could trade blood?

Moose - as of about 18 months ago there were just a bit fewer than 100 people to ever survive mesothelioma. I happen to be one of the lucky ones.
