I have yet to looked into this, but I understand there is a guide on how to take out the hard drive and recover files in a PC. I am very reluctant to start that process...
Had an UPSs, not keen on getting that bulk again. I suspect my best solution will be to hook it up multitrack with a laptop and record that way. Less fun, more practical.
Of course, that won't prevent the problem of a power outage taking down the VS and/or other gear that's plugged in sometime in the future. The UPS, as much as the "bulk" is annoying or a hassle, it is the only real chance of securing your electronics from harmful affects from power issues - granted it's not absolutely secure... nothing is.
Where I live, we have have frequent power outages and "blips". A UPS is totally required. I've never had a problem with it, but it is rather large - about the size of a Princeton amp.
