when i say 'final mix', means i'm not writing or arranging any more,
my best last pass before i tweak and master.

so, my demo of this had a more roomy drum kit...
and made it set back a bit, and seem more mellow and groovy..
this kit is less roomy, with a more muscular kick...slightly more aggressive.
i like it, but it's so different,
i no longer have a feel for it.
any thoughts?

Rob, I really like this one. Very tight. But... I got thrown out of the groove about 1:13 with a few syncopations - could be snare or kick? velocities on the snare the same when maybe first should be lighter? Kick velocity? I can't tell. If I listen to just those sections... its fine. When I move back to front, it still hits me. Maybe just something to check out. Could be my brain backfiring.

Best,
Bruce

That section is like it sorta fell apart. Post that section with the drums muted. If it's just the drums, you could do back to the MIDI and play with quantizing to the bass and guitars or something...

it's just a syncopated beat...
i'm surprised that it is throwing you,
it's dead on time.

but.......

if it trips YOU guys up,
i suppose it will trip everybody up!!
LOL
i totally feel it,
but i also know not to argue about it...

thanks for the heads up, i can write a 'straight' part thru that little section.

and i really LIKED that skip-beat!!
LOL

OK, NEW MIX:

https://soundcloud.com/bats-brew/poppin-2-eq

re-mastered, with drum part changes, mix changes, re-eq'd guitars,
changed the overall reverb IR from a big stadium setting,
to a wooden room chamber, which sounds so much nicer than the other one.

i'll tell you,
it's AMAZING how changing room IR's (reverb send is on several sub busses, but not drums) can change the entire feel of the thing.

i'm using Waves IR-L, and even tho all the name Room impulse responses (like Blackpool, Wembley Arena, Grand Ole Opry, Sydney Opera House, CBGB’s, Birdland, etc,,,,) are cool to play with,
i tend to use the plain jane Virtual Acoustics Devices, the synthetic IR's that waves builds up from scratch, i am using the LX48L Large Wood Room.

The drums don't bug me as much. I DO think in general with the "buh-dap dap" kind of things you'd want to vary the velocity more on the snares. I would go extreme say one is 127 make the other 65. And then reverse it--it's not always the one you THINK you should emphasize that pushes the groove in the right direction...then...once you decide with the extreme WHICH gets the emphasis, make it less extreme. It's just easier to hear (for me) when it's extreme which direction it should be emphasized...then reign that in to more natural. That kind of stuff can also be effected by the dynamics processing on a the snare (if that's not obvious)...sometimes it needs a little less "smacky" compression if it's going to be busier.

But, I don't think as mix2 is, it would've "taken me out of it" like the original did.

well, this 2nd version is pretty dialed in.
i'm very pleased with it.

the whole album is like this, every song being different, bringing something different to the table..
LOTS of story telling with this album.

i think you will dig the whole thing.

bass lessons....
you know i've been playing bass for as long as guitar,
and held down a couple of band positions as 'the bassist',
yet folks rarely focus on that part of my style.

on this tune, it's kinda mandatory!! LOL

that groove, in the 2nd version, is now less syncopated, and by stripping it down even more, became more muscular.
good call.

I missed V1

This is really nice. Love the contrast of the huge growling bass against the little guitar bits on each side. A lot of really tasty and outside guitar licks. The drums? Not drawing attention away from the piece.

It's hard to make that part of this process be a person. The individual sounds these days are so good. The difficulty becomes unifying the kit, the ambience then putting in the seemingly insignificant bits that happen when a person's limbs are all engaged, hitting things to their own clock.

So, I'd say bravo again. Another song in the album. Finishing is important

yea man! huge growling bass
i did it
can't use it all the time, but works for this for sure...

as far as drums, i touch every measure some how,
so it's pretty personal.
the idea, is to write the parts they way you would want your drummer to play them back for you........!
but of course, it's easier to edit already recorded midi loops, that way you don't step on yourself playing something bogus..

so yea, your right about that part.

the great thing about using the mixer in superior drummer 3.0, is that there are SO MANY AMBIENT and room mics available,
you can put as much or little ambience into the overall sound as you want.

so typically when i write fills, i will push and pull time here and there,
so it's rare that the meter of one of my drum tracks sticks to a metronome,
cuz i kinda hate that feel.

sometimes i get in a hurry, and just slap everything to a grid,
but usually, after i've recorded a few rhythm elements,
i go back and figure out where i can backbeat stuff,
and push meter here and there,
and then it really starts to breath.

i don't expect any casual listener to ever pick up on that much detail,
but the FEEL of the thing is what's important to me.

if you're tapping your foot,
and trip over yourself,
we only have ourselves to blame.
LOL

thanks kel...

We don't have the luxury of way to slap things to a grid ...plus the drums are usually recorded >> way down the project line ---

My second engineer recorded two >> 4 minute << EZ drummer stereo tracks --- we transfer them analog to the VS ( from Reaper ) ..if someone wants a guide ..

Yours sound fine -- by the way ;\)

THANKS MARTY!
For listening and commenting...

i rather enjoyed playing this style quite a bit...
writing in 'my' style,
has taken quite a bit of focus,

as i get older, i get better at it.
more to come...

in this day and age of commercial studios for hire, and modern daw's,
i don't see that as a 'luxury',
more a basic service.
