We used to have a thread here about the real stories behind the songs on our artist pages . . . so in that spirit I'll tell the story behind this week's #1 song
I moved to Connecticut in '96 from D.C. and got a bass player and drummer to work with me in '97 and '98. During rehersal one day I said that I wanted something to have a Texas feel to it and the bass player (Michael Fonicello) asked me what I meant.
I played the opening guitar lick to "You'll Never Know." I told Mike that that's what I meant by a Texas feel and sat down and wrote the rest of the thing in 10 minutes.
A couple of days later we went into the studio and recorded the basic guitar, drums and bass with a scratch vocal live-in-studio in a couple of takes.
When mixing the demo, I put down the lead and the final vocal.
It's a very American tune. It has the basic Texas feel, blended with a little of the tradition that I inherited from the scots-irish branch of my ancestors who lived in the hills of N.C. and Kentucky in the 1800's.
It's also a hex on my ex-wife.

The Fred Olsen has recorded with Michael Bloomfield, the Grateful Dead, Seals and Crofts (among others) . . .
so I'll stay theotherfredolsen . . . but I've noticed that if you google "fred olsen guitar" . . . I'm #1 so maybe

one day when i was a kid my daddy came home with a present for me --- it was a record player and a couple of 45s with yellow labels . . . "You Aint Nothing But a Hound Dog" was one of them . . . "Jailhouse Rock" was on another side
That year my heros were Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Zoro, Hop Along Cassidy, Willie Mays and Mickey Mantel --- in that order --- with a tip of the hat to that new thing called TV and Dick Clark for putting everybody on his show
been a long strange trip . . .
